XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17) 1974-1985

The Golf MK1’s rally credentials are real – Type 17 hatchbacks were competing on gravel stages across Europe within a few years of launch, and the car’s light weight and front-wheel-drive layout made it a surprisingly capable loose-surface tool when the suspension was properly sorted. The problem with running a stock MK1 on gravel in competition is straightforward: the travel isn’t there. When the surface drops away unpredictably, short-stroke suspension bottoms hard and the car loads up through the following corner rather than tracking cleanly through.

The XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover addresses that directly. Built for rally and rallycross use rather than tarmac circuit work, it extends travel front and rear to put more compliance between the wheel and full compression, and increases the thermal capacity of the shock system so damping holds consistent across a full stage rather than fading as the miles accumulate.

What this coilover does for your 1974-1985 Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17)

Extended stroke means the suspension has somewhere to go when a wheel drops into a rut or launches off a crest – on gravel that is the difference between the car staying settled and the chassis snapping out of shape through the following section. The increased volume of shock oil and nitrogen gas gives the coilover greater thermal mass: more fluid means the temperature rise from repeated high-load compressions is absorbed over a longer period before fade becomes a factor. On the MK1’s front axle – where the driven wheels are also managing braking load into hairpins – that damping consistency matters considerably. Three adjustment knobs let you tune the character for the surface: hard pack, fresh gravel, and snow each call for different settings, and this kit has the range to accommodate the variation.

About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover

XYZ Racing’s Pro Racing Gravel/Snow is built around the specific demands of rally and rallycross competition, where surfaces are unpredictable and suspension components face sustained high-load cycling that tarmac setups were never designed to handle. The extended front and rear travel increases the buffer distance before the suspension runs out of stroke, keeping the car more stable over crests and through compressions that would overwhelm a standard-travel unit. Enlarged oil and nitrogen gas capacity addresses the thermal reality of long stages: heat degrades damping consistency, and more fluid means the shock remains within its working range for longer before the performance curve shifts. The three-knob adjustment system allows fine-tuning across different conditions, and the valving uses a small oil hole design that channels oil through a restricted passage under large impacts – this produces some noise under hard compression, which is normal operating behaviour for this type of shock design, not a fault. The Pro Racing Gravel/Snow is a competition component, built where mechanical predictability under pressure is the priority.

Fitment for the Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17) (1974-1985)

This kit fits the Volkswagen Golf MK1 Type 17 (chassis code VO06) across the full production span from 1974 to 1985, covering everything from the base 1.1 and 1.3 carburettor variants through to the 1.6 GTI specification that features most heavily in historic rally classes today. Confirm your body style against the Type 17 designation – this covers the three-door hatchback, not the Cabriolet body.

Configure yours below, select the damping settings that suit your stage or rallycross programme, and put the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow to work on the surfaces it was designed for.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. With longer travel for both front and rear, it increases bigger buffer distance to keep the car stable. The most advantages of this product is to extend the amount of suspension oil and nitrogen gas which can increase the stability of the shocks and prevent the shock oil temperature too high from being exhausted after long-term use.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
