XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mitsubishi ECLIPSE 1989-1995

The first-generation Eclipse AWD’s tarmac rally credentials were earned the hard way. Diamond-Star’s MT12 platform combined genuine four-wheel drive with a compact, front-engined layout that made the GSX a natural competitor on North American sealed stages in the early 1990s – light enough to be quick, planted enough to be controllable. What the OEM suspension could not manage was the compression and rebound demand of proper stage conditions: broken tarmac patches, mid-corner crests, and braking zones that would overwhelm road-biased dampers within a stage or two.

The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for the Mitsubishi Eclipse MT12 (1989-1995) is built for exactly that operating window. Settings derived from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme are built into the damper from the outset – not a road coilover with the rebound turned up, but a specification developed through competition use on sealed surfaces.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse

On sealed-stage terrain, the MT12 AWD system can only distribute torque effectively when all four tyres stay loaded. This damper absorbs the jolt of abrupt compressions – uneven tarmac patches, crested braking zones, rutted apexes – that would otherwise transfer straight to the body and unload a wheel. Suppressing that body shock is where tyre traction is recovered: at speed on degraded stage surfaces, the contact patch stays honest where a softer damper would bounce the corner away. For an Eclipse running AWD, that translates directly into the 4G63T’s output going to the road rather than spinning into free air at the moment it is needed most.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally specification draws on XYZ Racing’s sealed-stage competition programme, and that influence shows in the damper calibration. This is not a road coilover tuned upward for occasional rough-ground use – the settings are calibrated specifically for tarmac rally conditions where bump profiles are abrupt, surface quality is variable, and the damper sees sustained compression cycles across a full stage run. The design prioritises impact absorption and body shock suppression over ride comfort, which is the correct trade-off for a car being used competitively on public-road stage surfaces. That competition background, applied to the MT12 Eclipse’s suspension geometry, means the platform responds predictably rather than reactively when road quality deteriorates mid-stage.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi Eclipse (1989-1995)

This coilover is specified for the Mitsubishi Eclipse MT12 chassis across the full 1989-1995 production span. The MT12 was sold in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations – buyers should confirm their drivetrain variant against the available specification before ordering.
