XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda 626 1993-1997

The fourth-generation Mazda 626 GE arrived with a front-drive layout, a willing KL-DE V6 in the higher trims and a chassis tuned for comfort first. Three decades on, the cars that survive in the UK tend to be enthusiast-kept, and the factory damping is invariably tired – body roll on turn-in, a vague mid-corner and a back end that floats over crests. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built specifically for owners who want to take a GE-platform 626 onto loose surfaces without rebuilding the car around it.

This is the rally-spec end of the XYZ range. Longer stroke, softer spring rates than the tarmac kits, and damping valved for the high-frequency hits that gravel and forest stages throw at a front-driven saloon.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1997 Mazda 626

Ride height comes up rather than down – gravel work needs travel, and the kit gives you the stroke to use it. The damping is the headline feature: 30-way adjustment on both bump and rebound, so you can run the front loose enough to let the nose key into a corner under braking, then firm the rear to stop the 626 squatting and pushing wide on power. Spring rates are deliberately on the softer side of the XYZ catalogue, which keeps the tyre planted on broken surfaces instead of skipping. Pillowball top mounts sharpen steering feel without the harshness that a tarmac-spec top mount would transmit. On a 626 GE that has been bouncing around on three-decade-old struts, the change in composure over a rutted lane is the kind of thing you feel in the first hundred yards.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is a monotube, 32mm-piston coilover designed for stage and forest use rather than circuit work. Construction is hard-anodised aluminium for the lower body with steel spring perches, and the damper is rebuildable – important on a kit that will be working harder than any road coilover. Spring rates are matched to the platform rather than offered as a generic set, and the longer body gives the suspension the travel a tarmac coilover simply cannot. The 30-step bump and rebound adjusters let you tune the kit to surface and weather, and ride height is independent of preload so you can keep the spring properly seated while running the car high. It is engineered for drivers who actually compete or practise on gravel, not for static stance.

Fitment for the Mazda 626 (1993-1997)

This kit is built specifically for the GE-chassis Mazda 626 produced from 1993 to 1997, covering the four-cylinder FS and the V6 KL-DE saloons and hatchbacks on the MA18 platform code. Front and rear are sold as a full set, with vehicle-specific top mounts where the OEM design allows.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
