XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 626 1993-1997

The GE-generation Mazda 626 wasn’t built with stage rallying in mind, but its long-travel MacPherson front and multi-link rear have always been more capable than the saloon’s repmobile reputation suggests. What it has never had is suspension hardware built to survive a gravel-spec recce followed by a tarmac stage on the same set of dampers. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for the 1993-1997 Mazda 626 fills exactly that gap.

This is a sealed tarmac-rally damper with rebound and compression range matched to a front-driven, soft-shelled saloon being thrown at kerbs, crests and adverse-camber corners. It is the spec to fit when a 626 has graduated from autotest and club hillclimbs into actual stage entries.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1997 Mazda 626

The standard GE 626 floats over crests and runs out of rebound damping the moment the road surface gets serious. The Tarmac Rally addresses both ends of that problem. Higher rebound control settles the body after compression strokes on stage-pace bumps, so the front tyres aren’t unloaded mid-corner. Ride-height adjustment lets you drop the front to recover camber lost to the 626’s tall sidewalls, or raise the whole car for transit stages and gravel events. Damping adjustment is on the body, accessible without removing the strut. The end result on a 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre 626 is a car that finally rotates on throttle lift instead of pushing wide, and one that holds a chosen line through a compression rather than running out of stroke and crashing onto the bumpstop.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally series is a stage-focused damper built on a monotube body with separate spring and ride-height adjustment, so corner weights can be set without compromising travel. Spring rates are pitched higher than the road-going Super Sport but softer than circuit-spec coilovers, because tarmac rallying punishes a car that can’t absorb a mid-corner ridge. Damping is adjustable through a clicker on the strut body, giving rebound and low-speed compression bias in a single control. Mounts and top-hats are designed for repeat removal – rally cars get rebuilt mid-season, and the hardware reflects that. Sealing on the shaft is rated for gravel ingress, which matters on mixed-surface events where a single stage of grit will end a road damper.

Fitment for the Mazda 626 (1993-1997)

This coilover is engineered for the GE-chassis Mazda 626 produced between 1993 and 1997, covering the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre saloon, hatchback and coupé bodies on the MA18 platform. Confirm chassis code from the VIN plate before ordering, as the preceding GD 626 uses different strut geometry and is not covered by this kit.
