XYZ Racing Drift Spec Coilovers — Mazda 323 BF (GTX) 4WD 1987-1989

The 323 BF GTX is the homologation special the wider Mazda hatch range never quite got credit for – a turbocharged four-wheel-drive Group A weapon that spent its weekends being chased by Lancia Delta Integrales and its weekdays pretending to be a shopping car. Nearly forty years on, the surviving GTX 4WD examples are rallying tools, road-rally hacks, and increasingly serious collector cars. The factory damping is long past its best, and the aftermarket support for this chassis is thin on the ground.

The XYZ Racing Drift Spec coilover for the 323 BF GTX gives this rare 4WD turbo platform a modern damper that can actually deal with the way the car loads up under power. It is the right pick for owners running the GTX hard – tarmac stages, hill climbs, track days – rather than just preserving them for shows.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1989 Mazda 323 BF (GTX) 4WD

The Drift Spec replaces tired, leaking, soft-by-design 1980s factory dampers with a properly valved monotube setup that resets the GTX’s handling baseline. Ride height is fully adjustable, so you can sit the car at a sensible road height for daily use and drop it for an event without changing kit. The 30-way damping adjustment is the real story – you can run the dampers soft for road work where the GTX’s already-firm bushings let plenty of road texture through, then firm them off for trail-braking into a corner where the nose-led 4WD layout wants to push wide. Spring rates are matched to the chassis weight and the four-wheel-drive load path, so you get rear-axle compliance under power without the front end collapsing on turn-in. On a 1980s 4WD hatch the difference under acceleration is immediate: the rear stops squatting, the diffs work the way they were meant to, and the steering wakes up.

About the Drift Spec coilover

The Drift Spec is XYZ Racing’s circuit-and-drift focused damper, built around a single-tube high-pressure gas design with a separate piston for oil and nitrogen. That construction matters on a turbocharged 4WD car because it keeps damping consistent as the oil heats up over a stage or session – twin-tube units fade noticeably under repeat hard use. The kit runs adjustable spring perches, 30 clicks of damping, and pillowball top mounts where the chassis allows, with shortened damper bodies to keep wheel travel sane at lowered ride heights. The whole assembly is rebuildable, which on a 38-year-old chassis you plan to keep for another decade is the spec line that matters most. Spring rates and damper valving are set for the GTX’s kerb weight and 4WD drivetrain, not a generic 323.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 BF (GTX) 4WD (1987-1989)

This kit is specific to the BF-generation 323 GTX 4WD homologation car built 1987-1989. It is not a fit for the front-wheel-drive 323 BF hatches or the later BG-generation GTX – the 4WD subframe and strut geometry differ. Confirm your chassis code reads GTX before ordering.

This suspension is designed for Drift race especially. With its special design, it helps the racers stabilize the vehicle body while in high speed turning in order to make a perfect angle. It can also enhance drifting performance. After lowing the ride height with proper bump stroke, you will realize how we made the drift controlling to the excellent condition.
