XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Honda CIVIC EF CRX TWIN CAM (Rear FORK) 1989-1991

The EF-generation Civic and CRX sit on a double-wishbone setup that was a genuine engineering flex in 1989 and still rewards a stiff, properly-valved damper three and a half decades later. The catch with the rear-fork chassis is that the geometry is unforgiving once you start raising spring rates without the damping to match – the car gets skittish over kerbs and pogos out of slow corners. The Racing Spec coilover is the answer when you’ve outgrown street-spec kit and the Civic is now a weekend tool that lives at Cadwell, Anglesey or Donington.

This is the spec for owners who are no longer hedging. The damper has been developed and signed off in live race programmes including WTCC, and the valving reflects that lineage – it is built for repeat sessions on track, not for soaking up speed bumps on the way to Tesco.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1991 Honda Civic CRX

Drop a Racing Spec under an EF and the first thing you feel is the front end finally settling. The light nose stops loading and unloading mid-corner, so trail-braking into a second-gear hairpin becomes a precision exercise instead of a guessing game. Turn-in sharpens, the rear stays planted under throttle pickup, and the chassis rewards the aggressive driving style this car was built for. Damper settings let you stiffen the rear to neutralise the EF’s natural lift-off rotation, or soften the front to recover grip on a bumpier circuit like Cadwell. Combined with a sensible corner-weight setup, the car holds a consistent ride height across a full 20-minute session – which is exactly where street-derived coilovers usually start to fade.

About the Racing Spec coilover

The Racing Spec is the top of the XYZ ladder and the valving genuinely comes from circuit work, not a marketing brief. The base specification has been developed through direct participation in race programmes including the World Touring Car Championship, and the damper curves reflect race-car expectations of compression and rebound control. Construction is built for heat cycling and repeat abuse rather than long-term street comfort. For cars running aggressive setups – A-class race builds, factory-style track conversions, custom suspension geometry – XYZ will build bespoke shocks to your spec; supply the car’s modification list and the circuit you run, and the valving is built to match. For a 30-year-old Civic that is now a dedicated track tool, that level of tailoring is the difference between a coilover that survives the season and one that’s right for the car.

Fitment for the Honda CIVIC EF CRX TWIN CAM (Rr FORK) (1989-1991)

Confirmed fit for the 1989-1991 Honda Civic and CRX EF chassis (HN13) with the twin-cam engine and the rear-fork suspension geometry. The rear-fork distinction matters – earlier and later EF variants use different rear pickup arrangements, so check your car’s rear suspension before ordering. Sold as a four-corner kit.
