XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda CIVIC EF CRX TWIN CAM (Rear FORK) 1989-1991

The EF-generation Civic and CRX sit on a chassis that rally crews have been campaigning since the early Nineties for one reason: it is featherlight, the twin-cam B-series sits low in the engine bay, and the rear fork suspension lets the back axle work hard over surfaces that would beat a strut tower to death. What it does not have, in standard form, is the wheel travel or the damping authority to land a yump cleanly and immediately go back to work on the next corner.

That is the brief this kit was built for. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is engineered specifically for loose-surface stage work in a 1989-1991 Civic EF CRX, where the suspension has to absorb broken ground, square-edge hits and landing loads while still keeping the contact patch loaded through long, off-camber turns.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1991 Honda Civic EF CRX TWIN CAM (rr Fork)

On gravel, the EF’s short wheelbase rotates fast and the rear axle is busy – that is part of the car’s character, and the reason it remains a giant-killer on stage. Long-stroke damper bodies and long competition springs let the chassis use its full travel envelope, so the inside-rear stays planted on corner exit instead of skipping and unloading the diff. The inverted strut layout puts the stronger section of the damper where the side loads are, which matters on a car this light when you are bouncing through a rutted forest section in fourth.

Set up correctly, you get a Civic that lands flat after a crest, holds its line over washboard, and lets you trail-brake into a hairpin without the front end washing wide on sandstone or shale.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is a discipline-specific damper, built for rally stages and rallycross rather than tarmac circuit work. The inverted-tube construction is the headline: it places the larger-diameter outer body at the top, where bending loads concentrate during high-speed bottoming and lateral hits, which is exactly the failure mode that ends most stage rallies. The long-stroke architecture is paired with long competition springs sized to absorb the chassis vibration of a sustained gravel attack, take heavy G-loads through fast direction changes, and survive aggressive landings off bouncy, broken roads.

Spring rates in this kit have been developed and tested by rally teams running XYZ Racing dampers competitively, and the damper is built to be re-valved and re-sprung for the three principal gravel-stage surfaces – sandstone, snow and silt – rather than asking one compromise spec to cover all of them.

Fitment for the Honda Civic (1989-1991)

This kit is built specifically for the EF-chassis Honda Civic and CRX twin-cam variants with the rear fork suspension layout, covering model years 1989 to 1991. Chassis code HN13. It is not interchangeable with the later EG double-wishbone rear, so confirm your car uses the rear fork setup before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
