XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Ford PROBE 1989-1992

The first-generation Ford Probe sits on a Mazda-derived front-drive platform that was never built with loose-surface punishment in mind. Throw a GT or LX at a forest stage and the standard struts run out of travel almost immediately, the body works against the chassis, and the front axle skates wide on anything bumpier than a B-road. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is a ground-up answer to that – an inverted-strut, long-stroke damper built specifically for gravel, snow and silt.

For a 1989-1992 Probe being prepped for clubman rally, rallycross or a fast tarmac-to-gravel privateer build, this is the spec to start with. It addresses the exact things that fail on a stock-suspended early Probe the moment the surface turns hostile: stroke, control over compression rebound on repeated hits, and a spring that doesn’t coil-bind when the car gets airborne over a crest.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1992 Ford Probe

Long stroke is the headline. The Gravel Rally damper gives the front struts somewhere to go when the Probe drops into a rut or lands off a yump, instead of running into a bump-stop and unloading the inside rear. That alone transforms how the car carries speed on a rough stage. The inverted-tube design puts the larger-diameter body where the loads are highest, resisting the side-loading that wrecks conventional struts on gravel within a handful of stages.

Spring choice matches the use case – long, progressive rates that absorb chassis vibration on washboard sections but still take the G-force of a sharp turn-in without the car falling onto its bump-stops. For a front-drive 2.2 or 2.5 V6 Probe owner, the practical gain is grip on corner exit: the inside front stays planted instead of clawing at air, so power gets to the road earlier out of slow hairpins.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This damper is engineered first and foremost for rally and rallycross – the most aggressive surface a chassis ever sees. XYZ Racing developed the inverted-tube construction specifically to cope with the cocktail of sandstone, snow and silt that defines a stage rally, where conventional twin-tube units overheat and lose damping consistency mid-stage. The long stroke and matched long spring are the two design choices that do the heavy lifting, letting the chassis ride out high-speed bouncy sections and absorb extreme G-load through fast direction changes.

Spring rate settings on the Gravel Rally range have been validated by working rally teams rather than calculated from a road-car baseline. That means the geometry and rate combinations are picked to keep tyre contact on a surface that’s moving as much as the car is, which is a fundamentally different problem from circuit damping. Construction is heavier-duty than the road-going XYZ ranges because the duty cycle is – gravel competition shock-loads a strut in a way no track lap ever will.

Fitment for the Ford Probe (1989-1992)

This coilover set is built specifically for the first-generation Ford Probe, chassis code FO16, covering the 1989 through 1992 model years. Confirm your chassis code against the V5 before ordering, particularly on grey-import or US-spec cars where the year cut-off can vary by market.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
