A front-engined V8 Ferrari built around a folding hardtail and a magnetorheological damper system was never on anyone’s rally entry list – which is precisely why this kit exists. The California’s factory Skyhook setup is brilliant on a tarmac descent and useless the moment the surface turns to gravel, sandstone or broken alpine fire-road. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover replaces it wholesale with an inverted-tube damper, long-stroke design and an integrated cancellation harness for the electronic damping ECU.
The use case is specific: gravel-stage rally and rallycross in a car the factory never intended for either. If you’re building a 2008-2014 California for stage events, hill rallies, or any event where the road runs out, this is the suspension that lets the chassis survive what you’re about to do to it.
What this coilover does for your 2008-2014 Ferrari California
Replacing the magnetorheological struts with a mechanically-damped, long-stroke inverted setup transforms how the California reacts to a broken surface. Compression travel that the original car never had means the chassis stops crashing into its bumpstops on yumps and compressions, so the front-mid V8’s mass stays loaded over the contact patch instead of skipping across it. The cancellation kit silences the factory damping ECU so you get no dash warnings and no system trying to override your mechanical setup mid-stage. Long springs absorb the shock loadings that gravel rally inflicts on a 1,735 kg GT, and the inverted tube routes lateral loads through the larger outer body – the construction logic rally cars have used for decades because it’s what survives. The end result is a California that you can actually point at a loose surface with the throttle open.
About the Gravel Rally coilover
The Gravel Rally series is engineered specifically for rally racing and rallycross – the most aggressive surface condition in motorsport, where the damper is doing more work than any other component on the car. XYZ Racing uses an inverted-tube architecture to handle the lateral loading that comes from sandstone, snow and silt, three surfaces that destroy a conventional damper rod quickly. Long stroke and long spring lengths absorb chassis vibration from high-speed bouncy sections and let the suspension bear the G-loads of cornering on a loose surface without coil-binding or topping out. Spring rates are set by XYZ’s own rally racing team testing programme, not by extrapolation from a tarmac chart. The supplied cancellation kit handles the California’s electronic damping bypass so the kit installs cleanly into a chassis it was never originally engineered around.
Fitment for the Ferrari California (2008-2014)
Built for the FE04-1-C chassis California with the 2-hole top mount pattern on both front and rear – the early specification that runs the magnetorheological Skyhook damper system. The cancellation kit for the electronic damping module is included with this part number, so the factory damping ECU is dealt with as part of the install. Confirm the 2-hole top mount pattern at both ends before ordering; later cars and revised mounts use different geometry.
