XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Nissan 240/260/280 Z φ51 welding 1970-1978

The S30-generation Z car was never built with a monotube damper in mind, and that’s exactly the problem with putting one of these on a stock chassis. XYZ Racing’s Racing Spec kit for the 240/260/280 Z resolves that with a φ51 welding construction, meaning the larger-diameter body is welded directly to the mounting hardware rather than bolted through a smaller stock-diameter sleeve, giving the strut a stiffer, more direct load path through the front and rear towers.

This is the spec built for time-attack and dedicated track sessions, not a fast-road compromise. On a car this old, with a live-axle rear and a front end that was never engineered around modern tyre widths and grip levels, that stiffer load path is what lets you actually use the additional grip you’ve bolted on elsewhere without the chassis flexing away the benefit.

What this coilover does for your 1970-1978 Nissan 240/260/280 Z Φ51 Welding

Every setting on this damper comes from XYZ’s direct involvement in circuit racing series including WTCC, not from a lab bench spec sheet. On a Z car pushed hard through a fast corner, that shows up as a front end that stays composed under trail braking and a rear axle that stays located rather than hopping over mid-corner bumps – the classic failure mode of an early-’70s live-axle chassis on stock dampers. The φ51 welded construction stiffens the strut-to-body interface, so the energy you put into the corner goes into the tyre contact patch rather than flexing the mount. For an owner running a 240Z, 260Z or 280Z on track days or in time-attack, that’s the difference between a car that’s fighting you on the way in and one that lets you commit to the brake marker.

About the Racing Spec coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Racing Spec line specifically for circuit racing, drawing its damping curves from direct participation in touring car competition including the WTCC. It isn’t a generic fast-road unit turned up a notch – every valving decision traces back to what worked on an actual grid. For chassis with more aggressive supporting modifications, factory-style racing preparation, or A-class competition builds, XYZ also offers a bespoke shock absorber route: send over the full spec of what’s already been done to the car and the circuit it’s aimed at, and they’ll build a custom damper around that combination rather than a one-size-fits-all unit. The φ51 welding format used on this Z-car application reflects that same track-first thinking, prioritising a rigid mounting interface over the serviceability trade-offs of a bolted sleeve design.

Fitment for the Nissan 240/260/280 Z Φ51 Welding (1970-1978)

This kit is built for the Nissan 240Z, 260Z and 280Z sharing the φ51 welding mounting configuration, covering the full production span from 1970 to 1978. Confirm your car uses this welding-type strut interface before ordering, as it distinguishes this application from other S30-era mounting variants.
