XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Nissan 240/260/280 Z φ51 welding 1970-1978

For gravel-stage work in a 1970-1978 Nissan 240/260/280 Z, the standard road damper gives up long before the spring does. Sustained washboard, ruts and mid-corner compressions cook a road-biased shock’s oil well before the stage finishes, and the Z’s long steel nose needs a strut that can still control weight transfer once the surface stops behaving. The Gravel Rally coilover is built around an inverted-tube damper aimed at exactly that problem: loose sandstone, packed snow and silt that changes grip from one corner to the next.

Long stroke and a matching long spring give the strut somewhere to go when the surface throws a series of compressions at speed, rather than topping or bottoming out and skipping the tyre across the loose top layer. That extra travel keeps the contact patch loaded through the G-force spikes of a fast rally corner, which on a car this light and this nose-heavy is the difference between a controlled slide and a snap.

What this coilover does for your 1970-1978 Nissan 240/260/280 Z

Fitted to a 240/260/280 Z built for competition rather than the school run, this coilover changes how the car absorbs repeated high-speed impacts rather than single big hits. The long-stroke, long-spring layout soaks up chassis vibration transmitted from washboard and rutted gravel before it reaches the bodyshell, so the car tracks straighter under sustained rough-road running instead of getting deflected corner to corner. Because the damper and spring are matched for this specific loading pattern, the Z holds its line through fast direction changes where a road-spec shock would already be pumping. The result on this chassis is a car that stays composed as the stage gets rougher, not just at turn-in on a smooth opening straight.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally coilover is built for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is consistently the most aggressive of any motorsport discipline. XYZ Racing uses an inverted-tube damper design specifically so the unit can be tuned for the widely different surfaces a rally stage throws up in a single run, from loose sandstone to snow to silt. Stroke length and spring length are both extended beyond a tarmac-spec coilover, giving the damper room to absorb chassis vibration and repeated high-speed compressions without running out of travel. That length also matters when the car is loaded up hard mid-corner, where the strut needs to bear extreme cornering forces without losing control of the wheel. Every spring rate offered in this range has been set by XYZ Racing’s own rally team rather than calculated on paper, so the rates reflect what has actually worked on a stage.

Fitment for the Nissan 240/260/280 Z φ51 WELDING (1970-1978)

This kit is built for the Nissan 240/260/280 Z (chassis code NI01) across the full 1970-1978 production run. The φ51 WELDING designation means the strut top is a 51 mm welded fitment rather than a bolt-in top mount, so confirm your car’s existing strut housing matches this mounting type before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
