XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mitsubishi GALANT VR4 4WD (McPHERSON) 1988-1992

Before the Lancer Evolution existed, the Galant VR4 was Mitsubishi’s turbocharged Group A answer to the WRC’s loose-surface rounds – a viscous-coupled 4WD saloon on the MT22 chassis that went into stage conditions as a works machine, not an afterthought. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built for owners who still use the VR4 as it was originally conceived: on gravel, snow, or silt, where the suspension is doing the real work.

The MT22’s McPherson front geometry can be loaded hard on a fast, rocky stage, and the stock dampers – designed to a road-car budget over three decades ago – have long since run out of answers for that kind of use. This kit replaces them with hardware built specifically for gravel-stage competition and cross events.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR4

The inverted-tube damper construction reduces debris contamination at the gland nut – critical on gravel stages where stone strike is constant and a failed seal means a DNF. Long-stroke dampers and extended springs work together to keep the VR4’s four corners in contact with unpredictable surface breaks, absorbing chassis shock from high-speed compressions that would bottom a standard setup and upset the 4WD traction balance. The extended travel range suits the VR4’s rally brief directly: when the car lands a crest or crosses a rut at speed, the suspension cycles through its range without running out of damper. Spring rates have been validated by a rally racing team against the specific conditions this kit is designed for – sandstone, snow, and silt.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface competition kit, and its architecture reflects that brief rather than borrowing from road or circuit hardware. The inverted-tube design – where the larger-diameter body slides over the smaller-diameter shaft – provides a stiffer assembly against lateral loads on rough terrain, while its geometry shields the shaft seal from the stone chips and mud that make conventional dampers fail prematurely on gravel stages. Long springs and long stroke are co-engineered: the spring handles the bulk of surface variation, the damper controls rebound rate, and together they manage the aggressive G-forces generated in fast cornering on loose surfaces. Road condition variants from sandstone to snow to silt each place different demands on suspension travel and rebound speed; the Gravel Rally’s development programme addressed all three. All spring rate choices in the range were tested by a rally racing team in actual competition conditions.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 4WD (1988-1992)

This kit is confirmed for the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 4WD on the MT22 chassis with McPherson front suspension, covering the 1988 to 1992 build years. Verify your front strut type before ordering – the McPherson-specific kit is distinct from any multi-link variant. Four-wheel-drive drivetrain is required fitment; RWD or front-drive Galant variants are not covered by this SKU.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
