XYZ Racing Drift Spec Coilovers — Mitsubishi GALANT VR4 4WD (McPHERSON) 1988-1992

The E33 Galant VR4 is where Mitsubishi’s turbocharged AWD story began – before the Lancer Evolution existed, this was the machine contesting the WRC on the 4G63T. Decades on, survivors are rare and owners building them for competitive drifting face a real problem: suspension geometry calibrated for tarmac rallying doesn’t transfer cleanly to the high-angle, high-speed commitment that drift competition demands.

The XYZ Racing Drift Spec coilover kit addresses that gap directly. Built around the VR4’s McPherson strut architecture, it reframes the platform’s front-end behaviour – reducing body movement through high-speed transitions and giving the driver meaningful control over the attitude the car holds mid-angle.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mitsubishi GALANT VR4 4WD (McPHERSON)

The VR4’s AWD system adds mass and mechanical complexity that a drift application has to work around rather than ignore. Lower the ride height correctly – using the bump stroke that XYZ’s Drift Spec geometry accounts for – and the car’s centre of gravity drops, reducing the body roll that works against maintaining a clean, consistent angle at speed. The McPherson front end, already doing heavy lifting in the factory rally configuration, gains a more planted base to operate from. High-speed direction changes that would previously push body weight into roll now meet more resistance, letting the driver commit earlier and hold a line further into the corner.

About the Drift Spec coilover

The Drift Spec is XYZ Racing’s competition-oriented build for drivers running structured drift events rather than fast-road or track-day use. The design targets body stabilisation specifically during high-speed sustained angles – the exact load case that separates a proper drift coilover from a lowering kit with ambitions. Ride height adjustment is paired with controlled bump stroke management to bring the car’s geometry to a configuration where drift control becomes responsive and repeatable. The calibration works the geometry changes that come with lowering directly into the setup, rather than leaving the driver to compensate mid-session. This is a kit developed for drivers who need the car to hold an angle on demand.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi GALANT VR4 4WD (McPHERSON) (1988-1992)

This kit is built for the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 4WD running McPherson front suspension, chassis code MT22, covering the 1988 to 1992 production run. Confirm your car carries the McPherson front strut arrangement before ordering – this fitment is specific to that suspension architecture and does not extend to other Galant variants or later chassis generations.

This suspension is designed for Drift race especially. With its special design, it helps the racers stabilize the vehicle body while in high speed turning in order to make a perfect angle. It can also enhance drifting performance. After lowing the ride height with proper bump stroke, you will realize how we made the drift controlling to the excellent condition.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
