XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mitsubishi EVO4-6 4WD 1997-2001

The MT18-generation Evo’s advantage on loose surfaces has always been how much wheel travel the chassis can be made to use before the diffs run out of ideas. On tarmac that appetite for suspension movement is a liability; point the same car down a gravel stage and it becomes the whole game. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built for that second scenario specifically, not as a stiffer road part pressed into service off-tarmac.

Where a circuit coilover chases minimal body movement, this kit is built around long stroke and long free-length springs that let the Evo’s 4WD platform absorb chassis vibration and take a hard hit from a compression without topping or bottoming the damper. It is the difference between a car that skips across a rutted gravel stage and one that stays planted through it.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2001 Mitsubishi EVO4-6 4WD

Inverted-tube construction puts the larger tube at the top of the damper body, which keeps the working seals better protected from the sandstone, snow and silt that a gravel-stage EVO4-6 4WD will pass through in a single event. Combined with the extended stroke length, the damper has room to soak up chassis vibration transmitted through the MT18’s four-wheel-drive running gear over broken surfaces, rather than transmitting every rut straight into the tub. The long spring works with that stroke to keep the tyre loaded and in contact as the car is thrown into a compression at speed, and to control the body movement under the extreme G-force this platform generates mid-corner on loose surfaces. The net result on an EVO4-6 built for rally or rallycross is a car that keeps working through the rough sections of a stage instead of skating over them.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is more aggressive and inconsistent than any circuit environment the company builds for. The inverted-tube layout was chosen to cope with the range of surfaces a gravel stage throws at a car – sand, snow, silt – without compromising damper sealing or control. Stroke length and spring length are both extended over a tarmac-biased coilover, giving the damper the range of movement needed to deal with high-speed bouncy roads and hard chassis inputs without the suspension running out of travel. XYZ Racing states that spring rate settings for this range were tested by a rally racing team, rather than derived on a rig or a smooth circuit, which is the relevant validation for a part meant to survive a special stage rather than a lap time.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi EVO4-6 4WD (1997-2001)

This kit is built for the Mitsubishi EVO4-6 4WD, chassis code MT18, covering the 1997 to 2001 model years. Confirm your car sits within this chassis and year span before ordering, as the MT18-generation Evo spans three distinct model designations (IV, V and VI) unified by the same 4WD platform this coilover is designed around.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
