XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mercedes-Benz SLS 2009-2014

The SLS AMG is a long, low, front-mid-engined GT with a 6.2-litre M159 V8 sat behind the front axle line and a transaxle at the back. That layout gives it near-perfect weight distribution on paper, but the standard air suspension was tuned for cross-continent civility, not for keeping a 1,695kg gullwing flat through Druids. The XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover replaces that compromise with a circuit-focused setup built around the ME30 chassis.

Racing Spec sits at the firmer end of the XYZ range, which is the right place for an SLS that sees serious track use. Lap times on this car are limited by body control and tyre temperature management, not outright grip – and that is exactly what a fully adjustable coilover with proper damping authority addresses.

What this coilover does for your 2009-2014 Mercedes Benz SLS

Swapping the factory air struts for the Racing Spec kit transforms how the SLS uses its front-mid weight bias. You get height adjustment to drop the nose closer to its optimum aero rake, and 30-level rebound damping to control the substantial mass shifting forward under heavy braking into a hairpin. The monotube damper design dissipates heat far better than the standard units, which matters when you are stringing together flat-out laps at Bedford or Anglesey and the OE setup would already be fading.

Spring rates and ride height can be set independently on this platform, so corner-weighting the car becomes possible rather than theoretical. Turn-in sharpens, mid-corner attitude becomes predictable, and the rear axle finally has the discipline to put the V8’s 571 horses down out of slow corners without the wallow that stock-suspended SLS owners learn to drive around.

About the Racing Spec coilover

The Racing Spec is XYZ’s circuit-orientated tier in the coilover catalogue, positioned above the road-biased Super Sport and below the full motorsport-only kits. Construction is monotube with a large-bore piston for high-flow damping, paired with hardened pillowball top mounts where the chassis allows for direct load paths into the strut towers. Spring rates are matched to the SLS’s substantial corner weights, with the firmer end of the rate range reserved for circuit work on slicks or semi-slick tyres.

Rebound damping is adjustable across 30 clicks, giving meaningful range between a track-day baseline and a setup configured for qualifying pace. Ride height is independent of spring preload, which is the correct engineering approach and the only way to corner-weight a car properly. The hardware is built to be rebuildable rather than disposable, which is the honest standard for a kit this far up the catalogue.

Fitment for the Mercedes Benz SLS (2009-2014)

This kit is specified for the ME30 chassis SLS AMG built between 2009 and 2014, covering the Coupe and Roadster bodies through their factory production run. The application sheet covers the standard SLS, SLS GT, and the Black Series-adjacent variants that share the ME30 platform fundamentals.
