XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mercedes-Benz SLS 2009-2014

The SLS AMG (C197/R197) is a 1,620kg front-mid-engined GT with a hand-built 6.2-litre M159 V8 sat behind the front axle and a transaxle at the rear. That weight distribution is excellent for tarmac, but the standard adaptive damping was never asked to cope with a loose surface. The Gravel Rally coilover for the 2009-2014 SLS takes that long-wheelbase chassis and re-tunes it for compliance over broken ground without losing the throttle-adjustability the car is famous for.

Most SLS owners will never see a forest stage. The ones who will – hillclimb, sprint, the occasional historic gravel event with a modern entry – need a setup that protects the floor and keeps the contact patch loaded when the surface goes away.

What this coilover does for your 2009-2014 Mercedes Benz SLS

Ride height climbs to give you working travel rather than the kerb-scrape default the SLS leaves the factory with. Spring rates are softer than the Circuit Master or Super Sport siblings, so the rear axle settles between hits instead of skipping, and the front stays loaded into the gravel under trail-braking – critical with that much mass behind the front wheels. The damping range gives you usable adjustment across surfaces: tighten for hardpack, open up for deep, rutted sections. The car still steers from the rear on throttle, which is the SLS’s signature – the Gravel Rally setup protects that behaviour rather than damping it out.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is the loose-surface specification in XYZ Racing’s range. Construction is monotube with a separate damper and spring assembly, finished for repeated exposure to water, grit and stone strike. Spring rates are deliberately set below the tarmac specs to allow the chassis to articulate over uneven ground, and the damper valving is matched to that softer spring choice so the car does not float. Ride height is adjustable independently of preload, so corner weights can be set without changing how the spring sits on the perch. The kit is built to take repeated cycle loads at long travel – the failure mode rally suspension actually sees, rather than the short, hard cycles of a circuit kit.

Fitment for the Mercedes Benz SLS (2009-2014)

Direct fit for the ME30-platform SLS produced 2009 to 2014, covering the Coupe and Roadster on the standard suspension geometry. Cars originally fitted with the AMG Ride Control adaptive damping will need the factory dampers replaced outright – the Gravel Rally kit is passive, mechanically adjustable suspension.

A car this rare deserves a setup chosen deliberately rather than guessed at – pick your spring rate and damping configuration below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
