XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 323 1998-2003

The BJ-platform 323 was never sold here as a rally weapon, but on broken British B-roads its short wheelbase and willing front end always hinted at one. The Tarmac Rally coilover is the spec that finally exploits that – built for sealed-surface stage work where the 323 has to cope with kerbs, compressions and the kind of mid-corner inputs a road car was never expected to absorb.

What the chassis gives you is a light, eager front axle that responds instantly to steering; what it lacks is the damping authority to control body movement once you start loading it. The Tarmac Rally kit closes that gap without turning the car into a road-going liability.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2003 Mazda 323

Spring rates and damping force on this Tarmac Rally kit are pitched higher than the street-biased XYZ ranges, so the front end stops diving under braking into a junction-style hairpin and the rear stays planted when you trail the brakes deep. Body roll on the BJ chassis is meaningful in standard form – you’ll feel it disappear once the spring platforms are set. Damper adjustability lets you stiffen the rear for rotation on tight stages or soften the front when the surface gets choppy. Ride height is platform-adjustable, so you can keep useful ground clearance for compressions rather than running the car on its bump stops.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This is a stage-rally specification kit, not a circuit setup borrowed and rebadged. The damper internals are valved for the higher-frequency inputs sealed-surface stages throw at the car – sharp kerb strikes, mid-corner compressions, sudden camber changes – rather than the steady-state loading of a smooth circuit. Construction uses monotube dampers with a piston large enough to dissipate heat across a stage distance, and the spring rates are chosen to keep the platform working even when the car is being thrown around. Adjustability sits on the damper body itself, so changes between stages are quick. The geometry of the lower mount preserves usable suspension travel rather than slamming the car to the floor – a kit designed by people who understand that a rally car needs to move.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 (1998-2003)

This kit is built for the BJ-generation Mazda 323 (chassis code MA15), covering the 1998 to 2003 model years. Confirm your chassis code against the VIN plate before ordering – the BJ ran alongside the older BA platform in some markets early in its life.
