XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda 323 1998-2003

The BJ-generation Mazda 323’s combination of a willing 1.5 to 2.0-litre front-drive layout and a kerb weight under 1,200 kg makes it a serious sleeper on loose surfaces – but the factory dampers were never built for repeated yumps, cambered gravel hairpins, or the abuse a club rally stage hands out. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built specifically to keep the 323’s chassis composed when the road runs out.

This is not a fast-road kit pressed into stage duty. It is a dedicated loose-surface setup with the ride height, spring rates, and damping window chosen for gravel work in a small front-drive hatch that owners are now treating as a credible historic rally car.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2003 Mazda 323

Sustained gravel work punishes a damper in ways tarmac never will, and the Gravel Rally spec is set up to keep wheel travel useful when the surface is constantly moving under you. You get noticeably more usable suspension stroke than a fast-road coilover, softer initial damping to let the tyre find grip on loose surface, and enough bump control to stop the 323 bottoming out on compressions or landings. The reservoir-fed monotube architecture sheds heat across a full stage rather than fading after three minutes of hard work. Front-end bite improves on entry, and the rear stays planted under lift, which is exactly what the BJ chassis needs to rotate cleanly without snap-oversteering on gravel.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally series is engineered around the demands of loose-surface competition rather than circuit lap times. Construction is full monotube with a separate gas chamber, longer-stroke shock bodies than the road-going Super Sport or Circuit Master ranges, and spring rates chosen for the way a rally car loads its suspension over jumps and rough ground. Damping is independently adjustable so a co-driver’s notes can be turned into a setup change between stages. Ride height is adjustable on the lower mount, which keeps spring preload constant when you raise the car for clearance on a rougher stage. The aim is a coilover that survives a full rally weekend on a small Japanese hatch without fade, leakage, or lost adjustability.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 (1998-2003)

This kit is built for the BJ-generation Mazda 323 (chassis code MA15) sold between 1998 and 2003, covering both the hatch and saloon bodies on that platform. Confirm your chassis code against the VIN plate before ordering, particularly if you have an early or late facelift car where suspension hardware was revised mid-run.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
