XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 7 SERIES E66 6 CYL 2001-2008

The E66 7 Series carries the best part of two tonnes over a long wheelbase, and on a sealed-stage tarmac rally that mass wants to keep travelling long after the road has stopped agreeing with it. Standard air suspension and passive dampers were tuned for motorway comfort, not for a car this size taking compressions and crests at speed with a co-driver reading pace notes. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover replaces that setup with a damper built specifically to control big-bodied cars over broken, undulating surfaces at rally pace.

Where a Circuit Master or Super Sport kit is tuned around a smooth circuit surface, the Tarmac Rally spec is built for the opposite: repeated compression hits, mid-corner camber changes, and surfaces that are rarely flat for more than a few metres. On a car the size and weight of the E66, that distinction matters more than most.

What this coilover does for your 2001-2008 Bmw 7 Series E66 6 CYL

The immediate feel on a 7 Series is control over vertical body movement without the wallow the factory setup allows once you’re pushing on. Absorbing hard compressions across a rutted or cambered stage keeps the tyre loaded and in contact with the road rather than skipping across the surface after a bump, which on a car this heavy is where lateral grip is won or lost. Suppressing body shock through the chassis also settles the platform faster after a jump or compression, so the next input – braking, turn-in, throttle – is met by a car that’s already settled rather than still recovering. On the E66 specifically, that translates to a rear axle that stays planted under load and a nose that doesn’t dive and wallow into the next direction change, both of which matter more on a saloon this size than on something smaller and stiffer. The result is a chassis that holds its line through a stage rather than fighting the driver for it.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This damper is built around the demands of sealed-stage tarmac rallying rather than circuit lapping, and the tune reflects that: it’s set up to absorb the impact of an uneven road surface and soak up the jolt of hitting a large bump without kicking the body off-line. That shock absorption is the core job – suppressing body movement so the tyre keeps its contact patch and traction isn’t lost the moment the surface gets rough. The stability this brings through mid-corner compressions is what XYZ Racing describe as letting the car handle properly rather than skating over disturbances, and the damping settings themselves are drawn directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme rather than being adapted from a road or circuit base tune. For a car the size of the 7 Series, that rally-specific damping curve is doing real work the moment the road stops being smooth.
