XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 7 SERIES E66 6 CYL 2001-2008

A two-tonne, long-wheelbase luxury saloon is not the obvious rally weapon, but the E66-generation BMW 7 Series has a following in gravel-stage and rallycross builds precisely because nothing else on the stage looks like it. That mass, married to a 6-cylinder engine sitting well forward of the front axle, means the standard self-levelling air suspension has no business surviving a sandstone crest or a snow-packed forest straight at speed.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover replaces that setup with a damper built for exactly this abuse. It is not a fast-road or track-day part dressed up for looks – it is the gravel-stage-specific end of the range, sized around the hit frequency and chassis loading a car like the E66 sees when the road surface itself becomes the obstacle.

What this coilover does for your 2001-2008 BMW 7 Series

Fitted to a 2001-2008 7 Series, the long-stroke damper and matched long spring give the chassis somewhere to put the vibration a washboard gravel surface generates lap after stage, rather than feeding it straight into the body and bushings. On a car this heavy, that stroke length matters more than on a lighter hatch – there is more mass to arrest every time a wheel drops into a rut or is launched off a crest at speed. The setup is built to carry the extreme cornering g-force a 7 Series generates mid-corner on loose surfaces without the chassis wallowing or the damper backing off partway through the corner. You get a car that settles after a compression instead of continuing to move once the input has passed.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is the harshest a competition car will face in any motorsport discipline – sandstone, snow and silt all place different demands on the same damper in the same event. The inverted-tube damper construction is the response: a layout chosen to keep the piston rod protected and the damper working consistently as the surface underneath changes from one stage to the next. Long stroke travel and a correspondingly long spring let the unit absorb chassis vibration from sustained high-speed, bouncy running rather than topping or bottoming out. Every spring rate in the range has been set and proven by an active rally racing team rather than calculated on a bench, which is the detail that matters most once a car this size is airborne over a crest.

Fitment for the BMW 7 Series (2001-2008)

Built for the E66-chassis 7 Series, 6-cylinder, produced across the 2001-2008 model years. Confirm your build date and chassis code (BM51) against your V5C before ordering, as coilover geometry is matched to this specific generation and will not carry across to the earlier E38 or later F01/F02 cars.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
