XYZ Racing Pro Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E34 6 CYL φ51 welding 1987-1995

The E34 5 Series carries its straight six ahead of the front axle and rides on a wheelbase long enough to stay settled through fast gravel sweeps, but demanding enough on turn-in that stage-spec suspension has to do real work. XYZ Racing’s Pro Rally coilover is built for exactly that brief: a φ51 mm welded-strut kit engineered for top-flight rally competition, not a bolt-in road-biased set wearing rally branding.

Where a standard coilover asks the factory strut housing to cope with loads it was never designed for, this kit replaces that relationship entirely. The 51 mm tube welds directly into a modified strut mount, giving the suspension a mechanical connection built to survive repeated jumps, ruts and compression spikes on loose surfaces – the setup a competition-prepared E34 needs before it sees a special stage.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 BMW 5 Series

Weld the 51 mm strut tube into a reinforced turret and the whole front corner behaves differently under load. Instead of the factory strut top absorbing shock through a bolted rubber mount, the E34’s suspension loads pass through a solid, welded joint – the difference between a mounting point that fatigues after repeated stage kilometres and one that doesn’t. For the 6-cylinder E34, where the straight six’s weight sits ahead of the front axle, that stronger mounting matters most under braking into compressions and over crests, where the nose wants to dive hardest. The coilover format gives you control over ride height and preload to set the car up for the surface in front of you – gravel, snow or tarmac – rather than accepting whatever compromise the factory strut was tuned for. On loose surfaces the result is a front end that tracks the line you point it at instead of deflecting off ruts, and a rear axle that stays settled enough to put the six’s power down rather than spin it away.

About the Pro Rally coilover

XYZ Racing splits its rally coilover range into two distinct classes. The amateur-grade kit bolts into the factory strut housing with no cutting or welding required, keeping the car reversible for owners who move between road and stage use. The Pro Rally kit here is the other class entirely: a professional-specification coilover built to be installed only after the strut turret has been modified and the 51 mm tube welded into place. That’s a deliberate trade – you give up the bolt-in reversibility of the amateur kit in exchange for a mounting point strong enough for top-flight rally competition, where gravel and snow stages load a strut far beyond what a clamped top can take repeatedly. Construction centres on that 51 mm strut body, sized up from road-going coilover diameters specifically to survive competition loading rather than a fast road commute. It’s a kit for a BMW 5 Series built to compete, not one being kept road-legal between events.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series (1987-1995)

This Pro Rally coilover is specified for the BMW 5 Series E34, chassis code BM10, six-cylinder models built between 1987 and 1995. Because the kit installs by welding rather than a bolt-in mount, fitment assumes the strut turret will be modified to accept the 51 mm tube before the coilover goes in – factor that into your build schedule if the car isn’t already prepped.

Rally gravel/snow suspensions are very professional suspensions and they are designed into two types:

1. Be installed directly with the original chassis. (Amateur type)
2. Be installed after modifying the car body. (Professional type)

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
