XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E34 6 CYL φ51 welding 1987-1995

The E34 5 Series’ semi-trailing-arm rear end and factory-soft damping were tuned for a comfortable motorway cruiser, not a rutted gravel stage taken flat out, and stock suspension gives up fast once the tarmac ends. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover replaces that setup with a damper built specifically for rally gravel and rallycross conditions, not circuit tarmac and not a fast road. On the BM10-chassis, 6-cylinder E34 built between 1987 and 1995, that difference is the gap between a suspension that survives a stage and one that doesn’t.

This is the 51mm strut body version, known in the range as the φ51 welding spec: the strut tube is welded to the housing rather than fitted with a bolt-on perch, which is the correct retrofit spec for a chassis this age. Where a Top Sport or Super Sport kit is chasing lap time on a circuit, this one is built to keep a BMW 5 Series planted and predictable through a forest special or a rallycross loop.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 BMW 5 Series

Fit this coilover to the E34 and the difference shows up first in how the car rides over rutted, cratered gravel at speed: the long-stroke damper and long spring soak up chassis vibration that would otherwise transmit straight into the wheel and unsettle the rear axle. The inverted-tube shock body copes with sandstone, snow or silt without changing behaviour underneath you, so the car’s line through a fast gravel sweeper stays consistent whether the surface is bone dry or churned to mud. Under hard cornering, the extended travel lets the suspension absorb the extreme G-force spikes a rally stage produces rather than passing them straight into the E34’s fairly tall, comfort-tuned body shell, which stops the inline-six’s weight pitching the nose down mid-corner. High-speed compressions on bouncy, broken gravel roads are exactly what a stock damper on a 1987-1995 5 Series was never asked to survive; this kit is.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally line around one assumption: rally and rallycross gravel stages are the roughest surface a damper sees in competition, rougher than any tarmac circuit, which makes the shock absorber the single most load-bearing part on the car. The inverted tube layout is there so the damper keeps working consistently whether the stage surface is loose sandstone, packed snow or fine silt, rather than being tuned for one surface type. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a tarmac-focused coilover, which is what lets the kit absorb chassis vibration from washboard gravel and repeated hard impacts on a fast, bouncy road without the damper packing down. That extra travel is also what lets the suspension take the extreme G-force loading a gravel corner generates without dumping it straight into the chassis. XYZ Racing sets the spring rates on this line from its own rally racing team’s competition running, so the rates reflect what holds up over a full stage rather than a road-car estimate.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series (1987-1995)

This kit is specified for the BM10-chassis E34 5 Series, 6-cylinder models built between 1987 and 1995, using the φ51 welding-body strut for a correct retrofit onto this generation’s original strut mounts. Check your car falls within that build window before ordering, since the E34 ran through several engine and drivetrain updates across its production life.

Pick your spring rate and configure the φ51 welding-spec Gravel Rally kit for your E34 5 Series below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
