The E28 5 Series’ semi-trailing-arm rear end is exactly the layout that made 1980s BMWs the default drift platform in the first place: light, mechanically simple, and happy to break traction the moment you lift or get back on the throttle mid-corner. XYZ Racing’s Pro Racing Drift Spec kit is built around that behaviour rather than against it, using a φ52 strut body welded directly into the E28’s front strut housing so there’s no bolt-in slop between spring, damper and chassis.
On a 4-cylinder E28 built between 1980 and 1990, that rigid weld-in connection is the difference between a car that holds a clean angle and one that wanders under lock. This is a circuit-drift specification, not a road-comfort kit, and it’s priced and engineered accordingly.
What this coilover kit does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series
Dropping ride height correctly on the E28’s front strut and rear semi-trailing arms changes the geometry the car needs to hold a bigger, more controllable angle through a high-speed direction change – that’s the whole point of a drift-spec build, and it’s what this kit is set up to do out of the box. The 3 external adjustment knobs let you retune compression and rebound separately as you find the balance point for a given event or tyre, without pulling the strut apart. Because the oil routes through a deliberately small internal passage on each knob, you may hear some noise from the damper over big kerbs or bumps – that’s a known trait of this valving, not a fault, and it has no bearing on how the kit performs on smooth circuit tarmac. The φ52 welded strut body means the connection between damper and chassis stays fixed under the repeated high-lateral-load transitions that a 40-year-old E28 shell was never designed to absorb from a bolt-in unit.
About the Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover
This is a coilover built specifically for drift competition rather than adapted from a track or road kit. Its design goal is to stabilise the car’s body through fast, high-speed direction changes so the driver can hold a clean, controllable angle instead of fighting the chassis for it. Getting the most from it means setting ride height and bump stroke correctly for the car and event – XYZ Racing’s own guidance is that once this is dialled in, the difference in how the car controls a slide is immediately obvious. The 3-knob adjustment and small-bore oil passage design are deliberate choices for circuit-drift response, and the resulting minor noise over rough sections is an accepted trade-off on a product built for smooth track surfaces rather than daily UK roads.
Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E28 4 CYL φ52 Welding (1980-1990)
Covers the 4-cylinder BMW 5 Series E28 (chassis code BM01) built 1980-1990. The φ52 strut requires the welding-style installation into the existing front strut housing rather than a direct bolt-in swap, so factor that into your fitting plan before ordering.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
