XYZ Racing Circuit Master Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 4 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The E28 5 Series’ welded-in φ52 strut design was never built with circuit driving in mind, and three decades of tired bushings and dampers have usually turned the standard ride into something soft and vague that squats under braking and rolls hard into a corner. The XYZ Racing Circuit Master coilover replaces that setup with a threaded, adjustable damper sized to the 52mm strut tube, giving the chassis back the front-end response the 4-cylinder E28 was capable of before age caught up with it.

Circuit Master is XYZ Racing’s lap-time focused range, built for drivers running their E28 in sustained track sessions rather than the odd sprint. On a car this light by modern standards, tuning the corner weight and damping to suit circuit use turns a 4-cylinder E28 into something genuinely competitive against newer cars on a technical layout.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series E28 4 CYL φ52 Welding

Fit the Circuit Master to the E28’s front struts and the first thing you notice is how much flatter the car sits through direction changes – the threaded body sets ride height independently of spring preload, so you can drop the nose without stacking extra pressure into the top mount. Three external adjustment knobs give separate control over compression and rebound, which matters on an E28 because the semi-trailing-arm rear end needs a different damping character to the front struts if the car is going to rotate predictably instead of snapping into oversteer. Braking stability improves too – the E28’s nose-dive under hard braking was always a known trait of the standard set-up, and stiffer, adjustable damping keeps front-axle load transfer controlled through a full circuit session rather than fading as the dampers heat up.

About the Circuit Master coilover

Circuit Master sits at the top of the XYZ Racing range, developed and shaken down with racing teams competing on circuits worldwide rather than tuned purely on a bench. The damper offers roughly 9,720 possible adjustment combinations across its three external knobs, a wide enough spread to cover a modestly-powered 4-cylinder E28 right through to a car running a built engine and stickier tyres. That range comes from a small-orifice internal oil path, which is precise at circuit-relevant damping forces but can produce a faint noise as oil moves through the passage over sharp bumps – expected behaviour on a product tuned around smooth circuit tarmac rather than pockmarked B-roads, not a fault. The kit is built to the same φ52 strut dimension as the factory E28 unit, so it installs via the same weld-in method as the original equipment rather than needing a bolt-in adapter.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E28 4 CYL φ52 Welding (1980-1990)

This kit is specced for the BMW 5 Series E28’s 4-cylinder engine variant, built between 1980 and 1990, matched to the φ52 strut tube these cars use. Installation is weld-in, following the factory method for this chassis, so confirm your strut housing is the 52mm type before ordering. Chassis reference BM01 in our system covers this fitment.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
