XYZ Racing Pro Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 4 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The four-cylinder E28 carries less weight over its front axle than the six-cylinder cars that usually fill out a 5 Series rally grid, and that lighter nose is exactly what makes it worth building properly rather than half-heartedly. XYZ Racing’s Pro Rally coilover is aimed at top-flight rally competition, where the E28’s MacPherson-strut front and semi-trailing-arm rear need a suspension that can absorb repeated stage-speed compressions and landings without the geometry wandering lap after lap of a special stage.

This kit isn’t the bolt-in option. The φ52 welded mount interface exists because a rally car built to this standard gets its shell modified to receive the suspension, not the other way round – and once that work is done, the coilover is matched to sit correctly in it.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 Bmw 5 Series E28

Weld the φ52 mounts into a prepped shell and the load path from wheel to chassis stops running through a compliant rubber bush and starts running through steel. On a gravel or snow stage that means less strut-tower flex when the rear axle loads up mid-corner, more consistent camber through a jump landing, and a front end that keeps tracking straight under braking into loose hairpins instead of walking. The four-cylinder E28’s lighter front corner weight lets the kit work with less static load to compensate for, so the geometry the coilover sets stays closer to what you dialled in at scrutineering rather than sagging back toward road-car settings after a few stages.

About the Pro Rally coilover

XYZ Racing splits its rally gravel and snow suspension into two builds. One bolts straight to the factory chassis for cars still running standard mounting points – the amateur route. The other, this Pro Rally kit, is the professional specification: the car’s body is modified first, then the coilover is installed into that reworked structure. For the E28 that means the φ52 welded mount rather than a stock top-hat bearing, giving the shell a stiffer, more direct connection to the damper than any bolt-in unit can offer. It’s built for cars where the whole front and rear ends have already been prepped for stage work, not for a daily driver getting an occasional gravel outing.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E28 (1980-1990)

This kit is specified for the four-cylinder E28 5 Series, chassis code BM01, across the full 1980-1990 production span, using the φ52 welded mount configuration rather than the standard bolt-in top mount. Because installation requires the shell to be modified to accept the welded interface, confirm your car’s front and rear structure has been prepped for this mounting standard before ordering.

Rally gravel/snow suspensions are very professional suspensions and they are designed into two types:

1. Be installed directly with the original chassis. (Amateur type)
2. Be installed after modifying the car body. (Professional type)
