XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 4 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The E28-generation 5 Series was one of the last BMWs to campaign as a genuine works rally car, and its RWD, semi-trailing-arm layout is exactly the sort of chassis that rewards a long-travel, high-preload damper rather than a road-biased track setup. The 4-cylinder E28 carries noticeably less weight over the nose than its straight-six siblings, which changes how the front axle loads up over crests and through braking zones on loose surfaces. These Gravel Rally coilovers are built around that reality: long stroke, long spring and an inverted tube layout designed to keep the wheel in contact with the ground when the surface underneath it is anything but flat.

On a car this old, factory suspension geometry was never engineered for repeated high-speed compressions over sandstone, snow or silt. This kit replaces that ageing setup with a damper purpose-built for exactly those conditions, giving the E28 a modern answer to a job it was doing competitively decades ago.

What this coilover brings to your 1980-1990 Bmw 5 Series E28

Fit this kit and the biggest change you’ll feel is composure over the rough stuff: the long-stroke design soaks up chassis vibration from broken surfaces instead of transmitting it straight into the cabin and the driver’s inputs. The inverted tube construction keeps the damper working consistently as the suspension cycles hard and repeatedly, rather than fading or losing control after a few big hits. Extreme G-force through fast direction changes – the kind an E28 sees mid-corner on a gravel stage – is managed by spring rates set specifically for this use case rather than borrowed from a road application. The lighter nose of the 4-cylinder cars means front-end response stays sharp even with the taller ride height a rally setup demands, and the rear end stays planted through the E28’s semi-trailing-arm travel instead of hopping under power. Owners running these on 1980-1990 5 Series cars get a chassis that behaves predictably when the surface underneath it doesn’t.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally range was developed specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road surface is the most aggressive a chassis will ever see. XYZ Racing’s answer is an inverted tube damper body, which handles the repeated, unpredictable loading of gravel stages more consistently than a conventional upright design. Stroke length and spring length are both extended beyond what a road or circuit coilover would use, giving the suspension room to absorb chassis vibration and heavy compressions from high-speed bouncing without bottoming out or transmitting shock into the body. That extra travel matters as much on sandstone as it does on snow or silt – three surfaces that load a damper in very different ways, and the design accounts for all three. Spring rate selection across the range has been validated by an active rally racing team rather than set on a bench, so the numbers reflect what actually holds up across a stage rather than a theoretical ideal. On the φ52 welded-body construction used here, that translates to a shock built for the abuse of competition use rather than daily-driving compliance.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E28 4 CYL Φ52 Welding (1980-1990)

This kit is built for the E28-chassis BMW 5 Series, 4-cylinder variant, covering the full 1980-1990 production run. The φ52 welded-body specification is matched to this chassis code, so confirm your car is the 4-cylinder E28 before ordering rather than a 6-cylinder variant, which uses a different shock body.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
