XYZ Racing Drag Racing Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 4 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

Launch an E28 hard off the line and the nose lifts while the live rear axle squats under the sudden weight transfer – exactly the moment a rear-wheel-drive saloon built in the early ’80s starts fighting you instead of hooking up. The factory struts on these cars were tuned for motorway cruising and B-road comfort, not repeated 0-400 metre runs where the difference between a clean launch and a spinning rear wheel is measured in tenths.

The XYZ Racing Drag Racing coilover kit is built specifically for that scenario. Because the E28’s original strut housings predate any bolt-in coilover standard, this kit uses a φ52 weld-in sleeve – the strut body is welded directly onto the existing housing rather than clamped, giving a mounting point rigid enough to survive launch loading without the sleeve working loose over repeated runs.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series

Once welded in, the kit lets you set up the E28’s front and rear ride height independently, shifting more static weight onto the rear axle before you ever stage the car. That matters on a RWD chassis this old: more weight over the driven wheels at launch means the rear tyres compress harder into the tarmac instead of spinning uselessly for the first car length. The adjustable damping is set up to control how quickly that weight transfer happens rather than resisting it, so the rear squats predictably instead of unloading and re-loading in a way that breaks traction. Above launch speed, the same setup keeps the rear planted through the run instead of getting light and vague as the 5 Series builds speed down the strip.

About the Drag Racing coilover

This range was developed for 0-400 metre drag work across FWD, RWD and 4WD platforms, which is why the adjustment logic centres on weight transfer rather than outright stiffness. The setup lets you bias front and rear ride height so more load lands on whichever wheels are actually driven – the rear axle on this E28 – the instant you get on the throttle. That extra load forces the driven tyre into harder compression against the road surface, which cuts down the amount of time the wheel spends spinning rather than gripping. Less idle rotation off the line translates directly into a cleaner hook-up and better stability once the car is moving at speed, rather than a launch that starts loose and never quite settles. On a car like the E28, where the standard strut mounts were never designed to take a coilover at all, the φ52 weld-in construction is what makes fitting this adjustment range possible in the first place.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series (1980-1990)

Built for the E28-generation BMW 5 Series, 4-cylinder variants, identified here under chassis code BM01 for the 1980-1990 production run. Fitment is via the φ52 weld-in sleeve rather than a direct bolt-in strut, so installation involves welding the new housing onto the original strut body – plan for a competent fabrication shop or an installer used to older BMW strut architecture.

  • BMW 5 Series weld-in coilover kit for pre-bolt-in strut housings

Spec your ride height and damping for this E28’s weld-in setup and configure yours below.

The coilovers are specially designed for 0~400 drag racing such as FWD, RWD or 4WD models. The setting allows vehicle to change the front and rear weight according to the transmission wheel in instant driving, and force the transmission tire having greater compression, which can reduce the idle time of wheel and improve the stability of the vehicle under high speed.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
