XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 4 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The E28 5 Series rides on a semi-trailing arm rear axle that BMW never fitted with adjustable damping from the factory, so a proper coilover conversion has to start by welding a new mounting point onto the strut body rather than bolting into an existing perch. XYZ Racing’s Super Sport kit for the 4-cylinder E28 uses a φ52 weld-on strut for exactly that reason, giving the car a coilover platform on a chassis that was never designed to carry one.

Super Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s range as the fast-road and weekend track-day option: firmer than a comfort-biased setup but still usable on the drive to the circuit. On the lighter-nosed 518i and 520i variants of the E28, that firmer front end pays off in sharper turn-in without overloading the standard subframe bushes.

What this coilover kit does for your 1980-1990 Bmw 5 Series

Ride height adjustment lets you correct the E28’s factory rake, which sags noticeably on cars now pushing towards forty years old, and bring the corner weights back into balance before you touch the damping. The 36-way damping adjustment gives you a genuinely usable range on this chassis: soft enough to keep the semi-trailing arm rear axle settled over broken B-roads, firm enough to control the camber change that axle design is known for once it loads up mid-corner. Because the strut body is welded rather than bolted to an existing perch, the kit keeps geometry consistent across the full height range instead of introducing the bind you get from aftermarket top-hat adapters. On the 4-cylinder cars, where the nose carries noticeably less weight than the six-cylinder 528i or 535i, the firmer front rates sharpen turn-in without unsettling the rear.

About the Super Sport coilover

XYZ Racing built the Super Sport line to solve the two complaints owners raise most about aftermarket coilovers: harshness over rough surfaces and a fixed setup that can’t respond to changing conditions. The damper uses a 36-way adjustment dial so compression and rebound can be tuned from a comfortable daily setting through to something firm enough for a track day, rather than locking the car into one compromise. Ride height is independently adjustable on the strut body, letting you set stance and corner balance without disturbing the damping curve you’ve already set. The construction targets cars that see as much road use as track use, which is why XYZ Racing positions Super Sport as suitable for weekend racing and daily driving on the same set of dampers, not a track-only unit pressed into road duty.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series (1980-1990)

This kit is built for the E28-generation Bmw 5 Series 4-cylinder cars produced between 1980 and 1990, using the φ52 weld-on strut body specified for this chassis. Because the strut mounts by welding rather than bolting to a factory coilover perch, fitting should be carried out by someone comfortable with strut welding on a chassis of this age.

  • Bmw E28 4-cylinder ride height adjustment that doesn’t sacrifice daily comfort
