XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 4 CYL OE φ45 (Front Welding Modified Rear Integrated) 1982-1992

The E30’s short wheelbase and near-even weight split make it want to rotate the instant you lift or get back on the throttle mid-corner – the exact trait that’s kept this chassis a grassroots track and drift favourite for four decades. XYZ Racing built the Top Sport coilover kit for the 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series E30 around that behaviour, raising spring rate and damping over the factory street setup so the tail-happy tendency stays predictable instead of becoming a handful.

This is the OE φ45 fitment: the front end reuses the factory 45mm strut housing and needs the correct welding-in modification to seat the new damper cartridge, while the rear is a fully integrated shock-and-spring assembly that bolts directly to the semi-trailing arm mounting points. No rear fabrication, and the front swap keeps the E30’s original strut geometry intact.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series E30

Once the front struts are welded in and the rear units are bolted up, the E30 sits with noticeably less body roll through direction changes and far less of the vague, sponge-like transition the factory dampers develop with age. Ride height drops off the tall factory setting, which lowers the roll centre and sharpens turn-in on a chassis that’s otherwise light enough to be thrown around easily. The increased damping force controls the semi-trailing arm’s rear-end movement under trail-braking, so the E30’s classic lift-off oversteer arrives later and with more warning rather than snapping in unannounced. On broken B-roads the extra travel control keeps the tyre loaded rather than skipping, which matters on a car this light and this old.

About the Top Sport coilover

XYZ’s Top Sport range is tuned roughly 30-50% stiffer in damping, or around 2kg/mm higher in spring rate, than the equivalent street-spec coilover, with the settings pulled directly from XYZ’s own Top Sport racing programme. The extra control is there to soak up the impact from uneven tarmac and larger compressions without transmitting the hit straight into the chassis – the kind of hit that unsettles a live rear end on rebound. Keeping the shock body from moving excessively under load is the other half of the brief: less unwanted movement means the contact patch stays planted and the tyre keeps its traction through a full corner rather than losing grip mid-way through. It’s a setup pitched at drivers who do the occasional track day but still want the E30 usable on the road in between, rather than a stripped-out, single-purpose race spring.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

Confirmed for the E30 3 Series 4-cylinder range built 1982-1992, listed internally under chassis code BM05. This is the OE φ45 configuration: front struts require the welding-in modification to fit inside the factory 45mm housing, and the rear is a direct-fit integrated coilover unit at the standard semi-trailing arm mounting points.
