XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 4 CYL OE φ45 (Front Welding Modified Rear Integrated) 1982-1992

The four-cylinder E30 carries noticeably less weight over its nose than the six-cylinder cars in the same generation, and that lighter front end is exactly why a fast-road coilover like the Super Sport can sharpen turn-in without beating up the chassis. On a 316i or 318i built between 1982 and 1992, the factory 45mm strut tube and semi-trailing arm rear were tuned for comfort first, which leaves plenty of room to firm things up before the ride turns punishing.

This kit is built around the OE φ45 front strut, converted via a welding-modified housing so the insert seats correctly in the stock tower, with an integrated rear unit that replaces the shock and spring as a single assembly. It’s positioned for fast-road driving with regular track days rather than a dedicated race build, which matters on a chassis this light – you don’t need extreme spring rates to get the E30 to respond.

What this coilover brings to your 1982-1992 Bmw 3 Series

Dropping the ride height on the E30 does more than clean up the stance – it lowers the centre of gravity on a car whose factory geometry already rewards a keen front end, tightening body roll through direction changes without upsetting the semi-trailing arm rear’s natural camber gain under load. The 36-way damping adjustment lets you run the front end taut for a track session on Saturday and wind it back off for the drive home, rather than living with one compromise setting all week. Because the front strut is a direct insert into the OE φ45 housing rather than a full strut swap, the E30’s original steering geometry and Ackermann stay intact, so the sharper turn-in doesn’t come with the vague, disconnected feel that aftermarket top-hat conversions can introduce. Ride height adjustment independent of spring preload also means you can correct for the nose-down stance many four-cylinder E30s pick up after decades of sagging factory springs, levelling the car out at the same time as improving control.

About the Super Sport coilover

The Super Sport line was built to solve the specific problem of harsh, uncontrolled damping on rough UK B-roads without giving up the composure a car needs for the odd track outing. Each corner runs 36 discrete damping positions, giving a wide enough spread to move from a settled daily ride to a firmer, flatter track setting on the same dial rather than swapping components. Ride height is independently adjustable at each corner, so front-to-rear rake and corner weighting can be dialled to the car rather than left to whatever the spring perch defaults to. Construction follows XYZ Racing’s usual monotube-style damper body, chosen for consistent damping force as the oil heats up over a longer stint than a fast road car normally sees. It’s aimed squarely at drivers who split their mileage between commuting and weekend track or B-road driving, rather than at a car that lives exclusively on a circuit.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

Built specifically for four-cylinder E30 3 Series cars from 1982 to 1992, using the OE 45mm front strut diameter with a welding-modified housing so the insert fits the factory tower without adapter plates. The rear is a fully integrated shock-and-spring assembly matched to the E30’s semi-trailing arm geometry. This spec is not shared with six-cylinder E30 applications, which use a different front strut diameter – confirm your car is a four-cylinder model before ordering.
