XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 4 CYL OE φ45 (Front Welding Modified Rear Integrated) 1982-1992

Sealed-stage tarmac rallying asks something different of an E30 than a trackday does: the surface changes mid-corner, crests and compressions arrive without warning, and the car has to stay planted over camber changes a smooth circuit never presents. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover kit is built around that brief, not around lap-time chasing on billiard-table tarmac.

On the E30’s narrow-track, front-strut/rear-semi-trailing-arm layout, body control under repeated compression-rebound cycles is what keeps the nose pointed where you left it after a jump or a crest. This kit targets exactly that, with damping settings pulled from XYZ’s own Tarmac Rally programme rather than a generic fast-road curve.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series E30

Stage surfaces throw sharp, high-frequency inputs at the front axle – broken tarmac edges, patched sections, mid-corner ridges – and the E30’s light front end means those inputs transfer straight into steering feel if the damper can’t absorb them. This kit is calibrated to soak up that impact rather than let it kick back through the wheel, which keeps the front tyre loaded and gripping through a stage rather than skipping across the surface. At the rear, controlling body movement through compression events (crests, landings, sudden dips) stops the semi-trailing arm axle from stepping out of line under power. The result on the E30 is a car that holds its line over broken tarmac instead of getting deflected off it, with more usable traction out of loose-surface corner exits where the standard suspension would let the tyre break loose. Ride height and preload are adjustable to trim the corner balance for a specific stage or co-driver weight setup.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ’s damper built specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement rather than optimise for a smooth circuit surface. Internally it’s tuned to soak up hard hits across big bumps and suppress the resulting body shock, which is the difference between a wheel that stays in contact with a broken surface and one that skips across it – and that contact is what keeps tyre traction available when it matters most, at corner entry and exit on a stage. The damping curve and spring rate are drawn directly from XYZ’s own Tarmac Rally racing programme rather than adapted from a road or circuit product, so the settings reflect what actually holds a car stable and predictable under sustained stage abuse rather than a single hot lap. This fitment specifically uses the OE 45mm front strut tube with a welded modification for the coilover sleeve, and an integrated rear design at the E30’s rear axle – a construction choice suited to a chassis this age, where the strut housings weren’t originally designed around a coilover sleeve.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

Built for the BM05 chassis code – the 4-cylinder E30 3 Series built between 1982 and 1992. Front fitment uses the OE φ45mm strut tube with a welding modification to accept the coilover sleeve; the rear uses XYZ’s integrated design for this chassis. Confirm your car matches the 4-cylinder E30 platform before ordering, as 6-cylinder E30s use a different strut diameter.
