XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 1 SERIES E87 6 CYL 2004-2011

The E87’s six-cylinder front end carries real weight over the front axle, and on a tarmac stage that mass wants to keep travelling in a straight line long after the wheel has turned in. A rally-spec damper has to control that transfer stage after stage, not just for one flying lap, which is why this Tarmac Rally coilover exists as a distinct build rather than a relabelled circuit kit for the 1 Series.

For sealed-stage tarmac work in the E87, the priority shifts from single-lap peak grip to consistency over jumps, crests and mid-corner surface changes that a smooth circuit never presents. This kit is built around that brief: keep the tyre loaded on broken tarmac rather than skipping across it.

What this coilover does for your 2004-2011 BMW 1 SERIES E87 6 CYL

The immediate change is how the front end deals with compression events – a crest taken flat, a mid-corner ridge, a badly cambered hairpin – without the nose ballooning or the rear stepping out of line behind it. Where a road-biased setup on the E87 would let weight transfer wallow through a direction change, this damper’s tuning is aimed at absorbing the hit from a big bump and suppressing the resulting body shock before it unsettles the chassis. That control translates directly into tyre contact: less energy spent bouncing the wheel means more of the contact patch stays pressed into the tarmac through the stage. On a 6-cylinder E87, with more mass to manage over the front wheels than the four-pot cars, that stability is what lets you carry speed into a blind crest with confidence rather than backing off. The net effect on the car is a chassis that stays settled and predictable when the surface stops cooperating, which is the entire point of a rally-specific tune over a track one.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This is a damper built specifically around tarmac rally use, where the surface is sealed but rarely smooth – road cambers, patched sections and mid-corner bumps replace the billiard-table asphalt of a circuit. The valving is set up to absorb the impact of that uneven surface and to soak up the jolt when the car crosses a large bump, rather than transmitting it straight into the chassis and unsettling the car mid-stage. Suppressing that body shock is the mechanism behind the traction gain: a wheel that stays in contact with the road generates far more usable grip than one that’s skipping. XYZ Racing carries those settings over directly from its own Tarmac Rally programme, so the compression and rebound characteristics reflect what’s actually needed to keep a car planted stage after stage, not a generic track calibration relabelled for gravel-adjacent use. The result is a setup aimed at stability through fast, blind sections – the E87 staying composed enough that the driver can commit to the next crest on the pace notes rather than the visible road.

Fitment for the BMW 1 SERIES E87 6 CYL (2004-2011)

This kit is built for the BMW 1 Series E87, chassis code BM59, across the 2004-2011 production run, and is specified for the six-cylinder engine variants rather than the four-pot cars. Confirm your car sits within that engine and year range before ordering, as coilover geometry differs between the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder E87 range.
