XYZ Racing Drag Racing Coilovers — Mazda MX-5 MIATA / ROADSTER 1989-1998

A 1989-1998 MX-5 barely clears a tonne, and on a hard launch that featherweight tail is the whole problem: there is not enough mass sitting over the rear wheels to hook the car up before the revs run away from you. The XYZ Racing Drag Racing coilover for the Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster is built around exactly that scenario – getting a light, rear-driven roadster to plant its driven tyres the instant the clutch drops rather than lighting them up to no effect.

This is a specialist setup for 0-400 work, not a fast-road or circuit compromise. The damping and ride-height strategy are aimed at managing weight transfer off the line and keeping the chassis settled as speed builds down the strip.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1998 Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster

The headline gain is traction at the moment it matters most. By controlling how the MX-5 shifts load rearward under launch, the coilover forces more compression into the driven tyres, so the contact patch is loaded before wheelspin can rob you of the run. That cuts the wasted moment where the rears are spinning rather than driving, which on a low-mass NA/NB car is the difference between a clean 60-foot and a smoky one. Once the car is moving, the same control keeps it stable at the top end instead of going light and nervous as the front unloads. Ride height and corner balance are adjustable, so you can set squat to suit your tyre and surface.

About the Drag Racing coilover

XYZ Racing developed this Drag Racing coilover specifically for straight-line launch loads, and the design is flexible enough to suit front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive platforms – the MX-5 being firmly in the rear-driven camp. The core idea is a setting that lets the car deliberately move weight front-to-rear in the instant of launch, biasing load onto whichever axle is putting power down. On the MX-5 that means loading the rear, driving greater compression into the rear tyres and shortening the period where the wheels are slipping rather than gripping. The result is a more repeatable launch and steadier behaviour as the car accelerates toward the trap. It is engineered for drag use first, with the geometry and valving chosen to serve the launch rather than to flatter ride comfort.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster (1989-1998)

This kit is matched to the Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster, chassis code MA23, across the 1989 to 1998 build range. Confirm your exact production year against the range above before configuring, as it spans the early NA cars through to the close of the generation.

The coilovers are specially designed for 0~400 drag racing such as FWD, RWD or 4WD models. The setting allows vehicle to change the front and rear weight according to the transmission wheel in instant driving, and force the transmission tire having greater compression, which can reduce the idle time of wheel and improve the stability of the vehicle under high speed.
