XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda MX-5 MIATA / ROADSTER 1989-1998

The NA Miata’s chassis is a study in low-mass balance: 50:50 weight distribution, double-wishbones at all four corners, and a kerb weight that lets a modest spring rate do the work of a much firmer setup on a heavier car. That same balance is what punishes lazy damping. Stock dampers fade within a few hard laps, the body rolls onto the outer rear corner under trail-braking, and lift-throttle rotation arrives faster than most owners expect.

The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is built for NA owners who run their MX-5 hard on circuit days and want repeatable damper behaviour from session one through to session six. It rebuilds the front-end keenness the car had when it was new, then sharpens it for track use without breaking the road manners that make the NA worth owning in the first place.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1998 Mazda MX-5 MIATA / ROADSTER

Drop a Top Sport set into an NA and the first thing you notice on the road is the body control – the float that creeps in around 60k miles is gone, replaced by a flatter, more honest cornering attitude. Turn-in tightens because the front spring rate finally matches the front-axle load, and the rear stops the lazy outside-wheel squat that masks the car’s natural rotation. On circuit, the 30-way damping adjustment lets you bias toward compression for high-kerb tracks like Cadwell or rebound for smoother surfaces like Snetterton 200. Ride height adjustment is independent of preload, so you can corner-balance an NA Miata properly without losing useful spring travel – critical on a 950 kg car where every millimetre of bump compliance counts.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s circuit-focused range, built around a monotube damper body with a separated preload collar and ride-height adjuster. Damping is 30-way clickable on a single knob covering both bump and rebound, which is the right answer for an MX-5 – owners want fewer variables to chase, not more. Spring rates are matched to the NA’s short wheelbase and light corner weights, so the kit arrives close to optimal out of the box without the need for a custom rate order. Pillowball top mounts on the front allow camber adjustment via the upper plate, which is the only sensible way to get sub-minus-three camber on a car that wasn’t designed for it. Construction is steel body with a hard-anodised aluminium adjuster collar – the part of the assembly that copes badly with British winter salt on most lesser coilovers.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-5 MIATA / ROADSTER (1989-1998)

This kit is built for the NA-generation MX-5 Miata / Roadster (chassis MA23), covering UK and import cars from the 1989 launch through to the end of NA production in 1998. The same coilover spans both the 1.6 and 1.8 NA variants – spring rates and damper valving suit both without a separate part number.
