XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mazda MX-5 MIATA / ROADSTER 1989-1998

The NA Miata arrived light, soft, and deliberately under-damped – a chassis tuned for throttle-adjustable cornering on B-roads, not for the loads a modern track day puts through it. Drop it onto a circuit with sticky rubber and the original sprung mass starts working against you: roll builds, the outside front tucks under, and the rear gets nervous on the exit. The XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover for the Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster (MA23 chassis, 1989-1998) is the version of this car the factory was never allowed to build.

This is the circuit-focused end of the XYZ range. Spring rates and damping are pitched for grip and platform control over comfort, which suits the NA’s short wheelbase and tiny kerb weight perfectly – the car finally has the structure underneath it to use the front end.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1998 Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster

Body roll drops sharply, and with it the lazy weight transfer that makes a stock NA feel vague on turn-in. The MA23 starts pointing where you steer it instead of leaning, scrubbing, then committing. Ride height is fully adjustable on the lower mount so you can corner-weight the car properly rather than chasing thread turns on the spring perch. The multi-way damping range lets you set up a softer rebound bias for road work and wind compression back in before a track session, which matters on a 950kg car where over-damping kills mechanical grip faster than it kills roll. Front camber plates (where supplied with the kit) give you the negative numbers the NA needs to stop rolling onto the outer shoulder of a 195-section tyre.

About the Racing Spec coilover

The Racing Spec sits at the firmer, more circuit-oriented end of XYZ’s road-and-track lineup. Construction is a monotube damper running in a steel body with a separate lower mount for ride-height adjustment, which means setting your stance does not consume any of the damper’s working stroke – a common failure mode of cheaper "lowering" coilovers. Damping is adjustable across a broad click range covering both bump and rebound from a single knob, with spring rates selected to keep an NA flat through high-speed direction changes without bottoming the chassis over kerbs. Pillowball top mounts replace the rubber OE upper bushings, which sharpens steering feel and removes the deflection that softens turn-in on a stock car. The result is a coilover that is set up for the way an NA is actually driven hard, not a generic kit with a Mazda sticker.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster (1989-1998)

This kit fits the MA23-chassis NA Miata / Eunos Roadster across the full 1989-1998 production run, covering the 1.6 and 1.8 cars. Front and rear assemblies are supplied as a complete four-corner kit. Confirm your build year before ordering – late-1997 onward cars cross into the NB development window in some markets.
