XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Toyota MR2 W20 1989-1999

The W20 MR2 carries most of its mass behind the driver, and on a loose surface that concentration is exactly what makes the car so quick to rotate – and so unforgiving when a damper runs out of travel. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover for the Toyota MR2 W20 is built around that problem, with an inverted strut design and long-stroke valving meant to keep the contact patch loaded over ruts, snow and broken sandstone.

This is the loose-surface specification, not a fast-road or circuit kit. It trades low ride height and firm street manners for travel, compliance and the structural strength to take repeated landings – the things a rear-engined Toyota actually needs when it is being thrown into a gravel stage at speed.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1999 Toyota MR2 W20

On a 1989-1999 Toyota MR2 W20, the first thing you feel is travel. The long-stroke damper lets the suspension follow the surface instead of skating across it, so the rear axle keeps putting power down where a shorter strut would unload and step the tail out. The inverted tube layout adds bending stiffness exactly where a rally strut takes its worst side loads, which steadies the steering when you clip a rut mid-corner. Spring rates are set to absorb big single hits rather than hold a flat cornering attitude, so the car soaks up compressions that would bottom a road coilover. For a chassis as sensitive to mid-corner lift as the SW20, that composure under load is the difference between a controllable slide and a spin.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally coilover is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface damper, developed for rally and rallycross rather than tarmac. The reasoning behind it is blunt: of the motorsport disciplines, rallycross subjects the shock absorber to the most punishing surfaces, which makes the damper the single most important component on the car. The answer is an inverted tube design intended to cope with the full spread of stage conditions – sandstone, snow and silt – rather than one ideal surface. Long stroke paired with a long spring lets the unit absorb chassis vibration, attack fast undulating roads without losing composure, and carry the extreme G-force the car generates when it is turned hard on the loose. Every spring rate in the range was validated by XYZ Racing’s own rally team, so the settings reflect competition use rather than a catalogue guess.

Fitment for the Toyota MR2 W20 (1989-1999)

This kit is built specifically for the Toyota MR2 W20, the SW20-generation mid-engined car produced from 1989 to 1999. It covers the full run of that chassis, spanning the early and later revised cars across the production span. Confirm your exact build and any non-standard suspension history before ordering, then set the specification to your car using the configurator below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
