XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow Coilovers — Toyota MR2 W20 1989-1999

The W20 MR2’s rear-biased weight distribution – the consequence of mounting the engine directly aft of the cabin – is what defines the car’s character on any surface. On tarmac, that rear mass provides traction the front-engined competition cannot easily replicate. On gravel or snow, it becomes the variable that decides whether you collect a slide or watch the back step too far, too fast. Standard road dampers run out of travel quickly on loose surfaces, stripping away the margin a mid-engine car in this environment demands above all else.

This is the XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover for the Toyota MR2 W20 – a kit designed for rally and rallycross rather than circuit tarmac. Extended stroke front and rear, enlarged oil and nitrogen capacity, and three-knob damper adjustment are the tools it brings to that job.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1999 Toyota MR2 W20

Additional suspension travel at both axles is the primary change over any tarmac-focused coilover. On the W20’s rear double wishbone – the assembly most likely to unload over a crest or into a loose rut – more stroke is the difference between a settled line and a weight transfer the driver is chasing rather than leading. Front MacPherson geometry gains useful compliance on off-camber approaches where a bottomed damper transfers load directly into the steering column.

Three-knob adjustment allows independent compression and rebound tuning – a practical benefit when moving between gravel and snow stages, or adapting to a fast open special stage versus a tight, technical one. The enlarged oil and nitrogen charge delays heat fade under sustained competitive use, which matters on longer stages where standard fluid volumes lose damping consistency well before the finish line.

On sharp, large bumps, the small oil passage design may produce some noise through the shock body. This is inherent to how the system manages extreme travel events and is not a fault.

About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover

The Pro Racing Gravel/Snow is XYZ Racing’s dedicated rally and rallycross damper series – not a modified tarmac unit, but a kit built around loose-surface competition demands from the outset. Longer travel front and rear is the central engineering decision, providing a greater buffer between normal operating range and the mechanical limits of the shock under the impact loads a gravel stage delivers.

Larger oil volume and nitrogen gas capacity address the sustained heat the dampers generate under competitive use. Shock oil temperature climbs quickly when the suspension cycles hard over an extended stage; the enlarged fluid reserves extend the operating window before degradation affects damping response. The three-knob adjustment system – with its small oil hole passage governing flow at extreme travel – allows independent tuning across compression and rebound axes, letting the driver adapt to changing surfaces and stage profiles between runs. Some noise through the shock body at maximum travel is expected, normal, and not a cause for concern on smooth prepared roads or circuit tarmac.

Fitment for the Toyota MR2 W20 (1989-1999)

This kit is built for the Toyota MR2 W20 chassis across the full 1989-1999 production run. The W20 designation covers all second-generation MR2 variants – naturally aspirated models (3S-FE, 5S-FE) and the turbocharged SW20 with the 3S-GTE engine. Confirm your chassis code before ordering; the W20 is a distinct platform from both the first-generation AW11 and the third-generation ZZW30.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. With longer travel for both front and rear, it increases bigger buffer distance to keep the car stable. The most advantages of this product is to extend the amount of suspension oil and nitrogen gas which can increase the stability of the shocks and prevent the shock oil temperature too high from being exhausted after long-term use.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
