XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Porsche 964 CARRERA-2 1989-1990

The 964 Carrera 2’s rear-engine layout is either your greatest ally or your biggest liability on a gravel stage – everything depends on how far you can trust the chassis under hard G-forces. With the 3.6-litre flat-six hanging behind the rear axle, weight transfer is amplified: the back end bites hard into loose surfaces when you’re on the power, but any mid-corner correction or rough patch that upsets the rear becomes a recovery situation fast. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built around that exact dynamic.

Developed for gravel-stage rally and rallycross competition, this kit uses an inverted tube damper construction and extended spring and stroke geometry to give the 964 the travel it needs to stay planted across sandstone, snow, and silt alike. Spring rates are not theoretical – each setting has been validated through live rally racing team development before leaving the build spec.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1990 Porsche 964 CARRERA-2

On a gravel stage, the 964 Carrera 2’s rear weight bias works in your favour – but only when the suspension can absorb the aggressive, high-frequency impacts that loose surfaces throw at it without allowing the rear to skip and unload mid-corner. The inverted tube construction reduces unsprung mass at the strut, which matters enormously on a car where the rear end can already feel lively over rough crests. Long stroke travel means the chassis soaks up compressions that would otherwise snap the back end sideways in a rear-engined car before you can catch it. Extended springs handle sustained G-loads through fast, bouncy sections without packing down, keeping tyre contact consistent across variable surface conditions.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally damper occupies the most extreme end of XYZ Racing’s coilover range, designed from the outset for the most aggressive road conditions in motorsport. Where trackday and fast-road kits are built around sealed-surface inputs, this unit is engineered around the compound demands of competitive rally: sandstone corrugations, snowpack ruts, and the unpredictable braking zones of silt stages. The inverted tube design mounts the larger-diameter body at the top of the strut, reducing the unsprung assembly weight carried by the hub – a meaningful advantage on a car that already carries its mass high and far rearward. Long-travel springs are matched to the extended stroke to absorb violent, asymmetrical impacts rather than transmitting them through the chassis. All spring rate settings across this range were developed and confirmed through actual rally racing team use, not bench calculation alone.

Fitment for the Porsche 964 CARRERA-2 (1989-1990)

This kit is developed for the Porsche 964 Carrera 2 under chassis code PO09, covering the 1989 and 1990 model years of rear-wheel-drive production. The 964 generation marked Porsche’s first move away from torsion bar rear suspension to coil springs – a geometry that this XYZ Racing application is built to work with at full rally-spec loads. Confirm your car’s model designation and production year before ordering if your vehicle sits near a boundary year.

The 964 Carrera 2 demands a damper that keeps pace with its character – configure yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
