XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — Porsche 964 CARRERA-2 1989-1990

The 964 generation brought a significant engineering departure from its predecessors: coil springs replaced the torsion bar rear suspension that had defined the 911 since the 901, opening up proper coilover fitment on what had previously been an awkward platform for aftermarket dampers. For the RWD Carrera-2, those factory coil units – now 35 years old at minimum – were calibrated for ride standards and road conditions of the early 1990s, not the fast A-road or trackday mix most active 964 owners put their cars through today.

The XYZ Racing Super Sport coilover for the Porsche 964 Carrera-2 addresses that gap directly. It is a fast-road and occasional circuit product: not a dedicated race spec, but capable of weekend sessions while remaining entirely liveable on public roads. For a rear-engined, rear-drive car where rear suspension behaviour defines the handling character, getting the damping right matters considerably more than it would on a conventionally laid-out front-engined machine.

What this coilover does for your 1989-1990 Porsche 964 CARRERA-2

On the C2, the engine hanging behind the rear axle means the rear suspension carries a disproportionate share of the dynamic load – weight transfer under braking, rotation mid-corner, and the snap-oversteer potential that the 964’s geometry could produce with worn or unsuitable dampers. The Super Sport’s 36-way damping adjustment lets you work through that range precisely: softer settings for road compliance on mixed surfaces, firmer settings for circuit sessions where body control through the Carrera-2’s rear-biased chassis needs tightening. Ride height adjustment gives you the ability to lower the centre of gravity from the factory stance – with a rear engine, that makes a measurable difference to body roll response. The suspension also absorbs road surface irregularities that matter more on a platform where every rear-axle disturbance translates directly to changes in yaw behaviour.

About the Super Sport Coilover

XYZ Racing’s Super Sport occupies the middle ground between comfortable fast-road use and light circuit capability. The 36-way damping adjustment covers a broad working range in a single product – the low settings provide compliance across varied road surfaces, including the broken surfaces that older Porsches are more likely to encounter in everyday UK driving; the upper settings provide the body control that circuit sessions and committed fast-road driving require. Ride height is adjustable on the coilover body, allowing owners to set their preferred stance and ground clearance independently of the spring rate. The Super Sport is designed to handle daily driving alongside weekend performance use without requiring a second set of dampers for road-to-circuit transitions. That versatility sits at the core of the type’s brief.

Fitment for the Porsche 964 CARRERA-2 (1989-1990)

This set is manufactured to the PO09 chassis specification and covers the Porsche 964 Carrera-2 for the 1989 and 1990 model years – the opening production run of the 964 generation and the first two years of Carrera-2 availability. Confirm your car is the RWD Carrera-2 variant rather than the AWD Carrera-4, which uses different front suspension geometry and requires a separate kit. Year coverage is 1989-1990 only.
