XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mitsubishi LANCER (VIRAGE) 1988-1992

The Lancer Virage sits at the start of Mitsubishi’s rally bloodline – the platform that preceded the Evo, already being campaigned on gravel stages in the late 1980s before turbocharged four-wheel-drive rewrote the competitive rulebook. For owners and competitors keeping these cars active in historic and club rally, the suspension package is where stage time is earned or surrendered, and that means hardware built specifically for the surface rather than adapted from something else.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Mitsubishi Lancer Virage is exactly that – a damper system developed around the demands of gravel-stage competition from the ground up.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mitsubishi Lancer (Virage)

Gravel stages punish suspension harder than any other competition environment. The inverted tube construction manages the elevated unsprung forces the Virage encounters on broken roads – placing the larger damper body mass higher in the assembly, reducing weight at the wheel end, and sharpening response when the surface is shifting constantly beneath you. Long-stroke units paired with longer springs give the chassis the travel to absorb hard hits at speed without bottoming, while the lateral G-loads through high-speed gravel corners are handled by a damper that has been validated in competition rather than on a test rig. On silt, the car floats through surface variation where a short-stroke setup would kick; on snow, consistent damper behaviour across the full stroke range keeps corrections manageable and predictable.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s dedicated stage-competition damper – designed from the outset for Rally Racing and Rallycross, where road conditions reach a level of aggression that circuit and road applications never approach. The inverted tube configuration improves unsprung mass distribution at the wheel end and increases the unit’s capacity to handle rapid, successive impacts without losing composure. Extended stroke and longer springs than you would find on any tarmac-biased setup are central to the design brief: they absorb the chassis vibration generated by high-speed rough roads and bear the extreme G-forces encountered through gravel-stage corners. The surface remit spans sandstone, snow, and silt – three contact conditions that each place different demands on a damper – and the spring rate settings for each have been verified by a rally racing team under competition conditions rather than inferred from data. This is a kit shaped by the reality of stage work, not a calculation of it.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi Lancer (Virage) (1988-1992)

This kit is confirmed for the Mitsubishi Lancer Virage produced between 1988 and 1992, chassis designation VIRAGE. If you are running the car in competition, check your specific variant against the fitment details before ordering – the Virage name covered more than one configuration across its production span.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
