XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mercedes-Benz AMG GT/ GT Roadster 2017-2023

The AMG GT and GT Roadster were never built with loose surfaces in mind, which is exactly why fitting a gravel-spec damper to one is such an unusual and deliberate choice. Front-engined, rear-driven and low to the ground, the GT’s chassis needs a completely different damping strategy the moment tarmac gives way to sandstone, snow-pack or silt.

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built for that surface change, not for smoothing out potholes on the school run. It replaces the standard damper with a design meant to keep the AMG GT’s wheels tracking a broken, shifting road rather than skating across it.

What this coilover does for your 2017-2023 Mercedes Benz AMG GT/ GT Roadster

Swap to the Gravel Rally kit and the first thing you’ll notice is how much more travel the suspension has to work with before it runs out of ideas. The long-stroke design lets the AMG GT’s wheels follow terrain that would have a standard coilover crashing into its bump stops within a few hundred metres of loose going. Under hard acceleration or heavy braking on gravel, the long spring keeps weight transfer progressive instead of abrupt, which matters on a car that already carries a front-mounted V8 and a rear-biased driveline. Mid-corner, where a GT normally has to manage load through a stiff aluminium structure, the inverted tube design and long-stroke damper absorb chassis vibration from washboard sections and high-speed compressions without kicking that shock back into the driver’s hands. The result is a car that stays planted and predictable through terrain changes a road-biased setup simply can’t process.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally coilover was developed specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road surface is at its most aggressive and the damper carries more responsibility than almost any other component on the car. XYZ Racing built it around an inverted tube layout so the unit can be tuned to cope with distinct surface types – sandstone, snow, silt – each of which loads a damper differently. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a road or track coilover’s spec, giving the unit room to absorb chassis vibration and soak up aggressive hits from high-speed, bouncy roads without transmitting that energy straight into the chassis. That extra travel also has to cope with the extreme G-force loading that comes with hard direction changes on loose surfaces, where a shorter-stroke unit would simply top or bottom out. Every spring rate offered in the range has been validated by an active rally racing team rather than set on a bench, so the numbers reflect what actually holds up across a stage rather than a theoretical target.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
