XYZ Racing Street Advanced Coilovers — Mazda 323 (BF) 2WD 1987-1989

The BF-generation 323 was Mazda’s late-80s front-driver – light, narrow, and built around a chassis that responded to spring rate in a way modern hatchbacks no longer do. Four decades on, the surviving examples are almost universally running tired struts, sagged springs, and bushings that have given up. A coilover conversion is no longer a tuning luxury on this car; it is the only honest way to get the geometry back where Mazda drew it.

XYZ Racing’s Street Advanced kit suits a 2WD BF that still earns its keep on UK B-roads. The platform’s modest kerb weight means it does not need brutal spring rates to feel composed, and the Street Advanced damper range is wide enough to keep the car civil on broken tarmac while pulling body roll out of fast direction changes.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1989 Mazda 323 (BF) 2WD

Drop the BF onto its bumpstops with worn OE struts and you get the classic late-80s Japanese hatch problem: a floaty front end that washes wide, a rear that skips over mid-corner bumps, and ride height that looks apologetic. A properly-valved coilover changes the character of the car immediately. Turn-in sharpens because the front struts are no longer dissipating energy as heat in a 35-year-old damper. The rear stops pattering over expansion joints. Stance comes down to where the arches looked right in period brochures, but with travel preserved rather than cut. Adjustable damping means you can soften the kit off for a long motorway run and firm it back up for a Sunday on a B-road without touching a spanner.

About the Street Advanced coilover

Street Advanced is XYZ Racing’s fast-road specification – a coilover engineered to deliver real handling gains without punishing the occupants on poor surfaces. Construction follows the rest of the XYZ catalogue: a sealed monotube damper body, hardened piston rod, and a separately-sprung helper assembly where the chassis demands it. Damping is adjustable across a single combined bump-and-rebound knob, which is the right call for a road-biased kit – it keeps tuning honest and removes the temptation to chase settings in the wrong direction. Ride height is independently adjustable at the spring perch, so corner balance can be set without compressing or extending the damper stroke. Spring rates are matched to the BF’s weight and front-drive layout rather than carried over from a heavier platform.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 (1987-1989)

This kit is built specifically for the BF-chassis 323 in 2WD form, covering the 1987 to 1989 model years. The 4WD variant uses a different rear setup and is not covered by this part number. Confirm your car is a 2WD BF before ordering – the badge work on late-80s Mazdas was not always consistent across markets.
