XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 323 (BF) 2WD 1987-1989

The BF-generation 323 is a featherweight front-driver from an era when Mazda was still figuring out what would later become the MX-5’s playbook. Owners running these cars in 2026 are doing it on purpose – usually with a Group A or stage rally mindset, because the BF was Mazda’s homologation base for the 323 4WD Turbo and its 2WD siblings share the same compact, tossable platform. Tarmac Rally coilovers exist for exactly this kind of build.

A 1987-89 323 on tired OEM struts feels every bit its age: vague turn-in, soft compression that runs out of travel over crested apexes, and a rear that skates on lift. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally kit drags the chassis into modern shape with proper damping authority and the ride-height range to actually corner-weight a 30-year-old shell.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1989 Mazda 323 (BF) 2WD

Tarmac stage spec means stiffer body control than a fast-road kit but more compliance than the Gravel programme – the front end stays loaded under trail braking instead of pogoing off mid-corner ripples. 30-way damping adjustment lets you separate bump from rebound feel on the move, which matters on a short-wheelbase car like the BF where a single click can swing the balance from understeer to lift-off rotation. Pillowball top mounts at the strut tower give you genuine camber adjustment on a chassis that has none from the factory. The shortened damper bodies preserve usable stroke even when the car sits 30-60 mm lower, so you keep the geometry honest rather than running on the bump stops.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally programme is built around a monotube damper with a separate piston and shim stack tuned for sealed-surface stage work and fast tarmac road sections. Construction is full-length adjustable: ride height is set by threading the lower mount, not by preloading the spring, so spring rate and corner weight stay independent. The 30 detents on the damping knob cover a wider range than a typical street coilover, with the firm end of the sweep usable on broken UK B-roads rather than locked-out and skipping. Springs are matched to the chassis weight and the stage-tarmac use case – firm enough to control a stripped or partially caged BF, not so firm that the car loses mechanical grip over patched tarmac.

Fitment for the Mazda 323 (BF) 2WD (1987-1989)

This kit is built for the BF-generation 323 in front-wheel-drive form, covering the 1987 to 1989 production span. The 4WD turbo variant uses a different damper layout and is not covered by this part – confirm your chassis is the 2WD shell before ordering.
