XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS) 2003-2009

The BK Mazda 3 was always the chassis enthusiasts pointed to when the MPS got the headlines – same Ford C1 floorpan, same wishbone-and-multilink geometry, none of the torque-steer baggage. What it never got from the factory was a damper package that did justice to the platform. Stock springs sag, the rear axle floats over mid-corner bumps, and the front end runs out of travel long before the tyres run out of grip.

That is the gap the XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is built to close on the 2003-2009 BK. This is the track-biased kit in the XYZ range, aimed at owners running occasional circuit days who still drive the car to the venue. Spring rates and damper valving are pitched for a stiffer primary ride than the Super Sport, with the ride-height range that lets you set the BK low enough to look right on 17s without losing the bump travel you need over a kerb.

What this coilover does for your 2003-2009 Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS)

Body control is the first thing you notice. The BK’s standard tendency to dive heavily into braking zones and pitch on turn-in gets cleaned up immediately – load transfer happens, but it happens on your terms rather than the bushing’s. 30-way damping adjustment is wide enough that you can soften the rears for a bumpy B-road and stiffen the fronts for a smooth circuit without rebuilding the car between sessions. Independent ride-height adjustment via the lower bracket means you set corner-weights without giving up shock stroke, which is the trap most budget coilovers fall into on this chassis. The pillow-ball top mounts sharpen steering response by removing the rubber slop that the stock upper bushes develop after 100,000 miles – and most BKs on UK roads are well past that now.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport is XYZ Racing’s circuit-oriented spec, sitting one step below the full Racing Spec in their hierarchy. Construction is a monotube damper with a 44mm-class piston and a single-tube reservoir integrated into the body, which gives the oil volume to handle repeat heat cycles without the fade you get from twin-tube budget units. Damping is adjusted via a single 30-position click wheel on the top of the shock, with bump and rebound moving together on a fixed curve – simpler to live with than a separate-circuit racing damper, and more than sufficient for the BK’s mass and tyre options. The springs are linear-rate, drop-tested for set, and matched to the Mazda 3’s corner weights rather than carried over from a generic platform. The whole assembly is rebuildable and revalvable when the time comes, which on a coilover at this price point is the spec that separates serious kit from disposable.

Fitment for the Mazda 3 (2003-2009)

This kit is for the pre-facelift and facelift BK Mazda 3 in NON MPS trim – 1.4, 1.6, and 2.0 petrol plus the 1.6 and 2.0 MZR-CD diesels, 2003 to 2009 production. It is not the fitment for the BK MPS turbo, which uses different front-strut hardware and is listed separately. Hatch and saloon bodies share suspension geometry and are covered by the same kit.
