XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS) 2003-2009

The BK Mazda 3 was never the obvious rally weapon, but anyone who has chucked one down a damp B-road knows the chassis has more in it than the factory ever gave it credit for. The MZR-powered 1.6 and 2.0 cars are light at the nose for a C-segment hatch, the steering rack is quick by 2000s standards, and the rear torsion-beam will rotate cleanly once you stop letting it bind on tired OE dampers. What it needs is travel, control over broken surfaces, and a spring rate that doesn’t packer the bump-stops the first time a crest unloads the inside rear.

The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for that exact brief on the BK platform: a stage car that still has to drive home, or a fast-road hatch being prepped for sealed-surface events without losing usability.

What this coilover does for your 2003-2009 Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS)

Tarmac Rally damping prioritises composure over rough sealed surfaces – the kind of patched, cambered, mid-corner-bump roads UK rally stages actually run on. On the BK you’ll feel two things immediately: the front-end stops pattering over expansion joints under trail-braking, and the rear stays planted when you load it through a fourth-gear sweeper. Ride height is adjustable independently of spring preload, so you can corner-weight the car without losing stroke. The 30-way damping range gives you a genuinely useful spread between road-survivable and stage-stiff, rather than a narrow window either side of compromised.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

A purpose-tuned twin-purpose damper built around a 52mm large-bore monotube body, the Tarmac Rally uses higher gas pressure and a revised valving curve aimed at high-frequency surface inputs rather than smooth-circuit consistency. Springs are matched to the chassis weight at each corner rather than catalogued off a generic kit. Pillowball top mounts on the front struts sharpen turn-in response and remove the deflection you get from worn rubber top hats, which on a 20-year-old BK is a meaningful gain on its own. Camber adjustment is built into the front mounts. The shock bodies are anodised and the threaded sleeves run on PTFE-impregnated bushings, so spring perches still move freely after a winter of salt and grit.

Fitment for the Mazda 3 (BK) (Years 2003-2009)

This kit is specified for the BK-generation Mazda 3 in non-MPS trim only – 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 MZR petrol cars and the 1.6 MZ-CD diesel, hatchback and saloon, built 2003 through to the BL-series changeover in 2009. The MPS turbo car uses a different front strut and is not covered here.
