XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS) 2003-2009

The first-generation Mazda 3 BK is one of those chassis that rewards proper damping more than almost any other family hatch of its era. Ford C1 platform underneath, decent geometry, but a soft factory tune that washes wide on turn-in and rides on its bump stops the moment you add bigger wheels or a passenger. The Racing Spec coilover from XYZ Racing is the answer for BK owners who treat their car as a weekend track tool first and a daily second.

This is the firmer, circuit-leaning kit in the XYZ range. It pairs 30-way damping adjustment with separate ride-height adjustment via the lower bracket, so corner-weighting and rake can be set without losing usable shock stroke. For a 1.6, 2.0 or 2.3 Mazda 3 hatch or saloon being run on UK B-roads and the occasional Cadwell or Bedford day, it is the spec that actually justifies itself.

What this coilover does for your 2003-2009 Mazda 3 (BK) (NON MPS)

Drop the BK on a Racing Spec set and the first thing that disappears is the front-axle vagueness. The pillowball top mounts pull camber gain on initial steering input, so the outside-front contact patch loads cleanly rather than rolling over onto the sidewall. The 30-click damping range is wide enough that you can soften it back off for the motorway leg home, then firm the front compression for a track session without touching ride height. Monotube construction means the dampers shrug off heat across a 20-minute session, which is where the standard struts on a BK are well into fade. Spring rates are sized for the BK’s kerb weight rather than carried over from a heavier platform, so the car still moves into its travel under braking instead of skating across white lines.

About the Racing Spec coilover

The Racing Spec sits a step above the Super Sport in XYZ’s hierarchy and is built around full-length adjustment, a 30-way damping knob, and pillowball upper mounts at the strut tops. Damper bodies are monotube with a large-diameter piston, which gives the kit the oil volume to stay consistent when you stack lap after lap onto it. Springs are linear rate and matched to the BK’s front-strut, rear-multilink layout – the rear in particular benefits, as the standard rear dampers are the BK’s known weak point on a loaded car. Ride height is adjusted on the lower bracket, separating it from preload so you can corner-weight the car without ending up on the bump rubbers. It is a kit aimed squarely at owners running the car hard – not a budget cosmetic drop.

Fitment for the Mazda 3 (BK) (2003-2009)

Fits the first-generation Mazda 3 on the BK chassis code, both hatchback and saloon, across the 2003-2009 production run. This kit is for the non-MPS variants only – the MPS Mk1 uses different front strut and rear damper hardware and has its own dedicated XYZ part number. Covers the 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.3 petrol cars and the 1.6 diesel on the same chassis.
