XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA8/9 BB1/2/3/4 1991-1996

The fourth-gen Prelude is a curious rally weapon. A long-bonneted front-driver with optional 4WS, a screwed-down chassis, and the kind of nose-led balance that punishes any damper that can’t keep the front tyres planted on a loose surface. Drop one onto a gravel stage and the BA/BB platform asks two things of its suspension: huge usable travel to soak up ruts, and dampers that won’t fade after the third hairpin.

That is the brief the XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built to answer. This is the rally-specific tune in the XYZ range, developed for stage use on a Honda Prelude BA8/9 BB1/2/3/4 (1991-1996) where the road surface is sandstone, snow, silt or worse.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1996 Honda Prelude

The Gravel Rally setup transforms a road-biased Prelude into something that can take a beating without giving the driver any nasty surprises. The inverted-tube construction stiffens the strut against side-loading – the exact loading the front axle sees when the car lands sideways off a crest or scrubs over loose camber. Longer stroke means the dampers actually use their travel on the rough stuff rather than topping out mid-corner. The longer springs hold the chassis up through compression events that would have a fast-road coilover bottoming on its bumpstop. On a Prelude, where lift-off oversteer is shallow and front grip is everything, that translates to a front end that keeps biting through ruts and hard braking zones, with a rear that stays composed rather than skating on bump.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is XYZ Racing’s purpose-tuned rally damper, developed for the most punishing surface in motorsport – gravel and rally-cross stages. The construction uses an inverted-tube design (large-diameter outer body, slim damper rod) chosen specifically to resist the bending loads that wreck conventional struts on loose surfaces. Stroke length and spring length are both extended versus XYZ’s circuit-focused coilovers, which lets the unit absorb chassis vibration from high-speed compressions and tolerate the G-forces of a fast turn onto a rough road. Spring rates are not pulled from a road-car catalogue; XYZ states they are tested with rally teams, which means the rates are matched to the kind of suspension travel and weight transfer a stage car actually generates. The result is a damper engineered to attack sandstone, snow and silt without losing composure between events.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude (1991-1996)

This kit fits the fourth-generation Honda Prelude, BA8/9 and BB1/2/3/4 chassis codes, model years 1991 through 1996. Confirm your specific trim and 4WS or non-4WS status against your VIN before ordering – fourth-gen Prelude rear setups vary across that range.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
