XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA8/9 BB1/2/3/4 1991-1996

The fourth-gen Prelude is a curious thing to take rallying. Front-wheel drive, double wishbones at all four corners, and on the BB1/BB4 cars the Super Handling 4WS rear rack that quietly rewrites what the back axle does mid-corner. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for that platform when the surface stops being smooth – broken B-road tarmac, sealed-stage rally surfaces, the kind of road where a track-spec damper would be picked apart inside two miles.

For a 1991-1996 Prelude being used the way these cars are actually used in 2026 – historic tarmac rally, club-level stage events, fast road on surfaces the council has given up on – this is the kit that lets the chassis breathe. Long damper stroke, compliance where it matters, body control where it doesn’t.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1996 Honda Prelude

The double-wishbone Prelude was always a sweet-handling chassis, but the factory dampers were calibrated for Japanese expressways and were never meant to survive 30-year-old British surfaces at pace. A Tarmac Rally damper changes the car’s relationship with the road – it absorbs the hit when you clip an exposed manhole or a sunken patch mid-corner, instead of pinging the tyre off the surface and washing the nose wide. You keep front-end grip through the rough stuff, which on a Prelude is the difference between a clean entry and an embarrassing one. The rear axle settles faster between hits, which matters even more on 4WS cars where unsettled compliance at the back has the rear steering working against you. Ride height drops to something sensible, geometry comes back into the window the suspension was designed around, and the car finally feels like the platform Honda’s engineers actually drew.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This is XYZ Racing’s sealed-stage tarmac specification – a damper engineered specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement without losing primary body control. The valving is set up to suppress shock through the body when the car crosses a big bump, keeping the contact patch loaded and traction available rather than letting the tyre go light. The settings come directly out of XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme, which is the relevant point: this isn’t a circuit damper with softer springs, it’s a different valving philosophy written for surfaces that punish circuit dampers. Construction is a full coilover replacement – height-adjustable, with damper rates tuned for the compromise tarmac rally actually demands, where stability under provocation matters as much as outright stiffness.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude (1991-1996)

Engineered for the fourth-generation Prelude under Honda chassis codes BA8, BA9, BB1, BB2, BB3 and BB4, covering the 1991 to 1996 production run. This covers both the standard front-wheel-drive cars and the 4WS-equipped variants – confirm your exact chassis code against the configurator before ordering.
