XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA8/9 BB1/2/3/4 1991-1996

The fourth-gen Prelude is one of the most underrated front-drive chassis Honda ever built – a wide, low car with double wishbones at every corner and, in the 4WS cars, a rear axle that genuinely steers. That geometry rewards a damper that can keep the outside-front tyre loaded through long, committed corners without falling over on its springs mid-apex. The Racing Spec is built for exactly that work.

This is the top of the XYZ coilover range for circuit and time-attack use on the BA8/9 and BB1/2/3/4 Prelude. Spring rates, valving and travel are specified for race conditions first and road manners second – if your Prelude is a weekend track car, a hillclimb weapon, or a Type S/SiR with serious aero and slicks, this is the kit the catalogue points to.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1996 Honda Prelude Ba8/9 Bb1/2/3/4

The Racing Spec lets a 30-year-old Prelude behave like a current-decade track car. Damping settings derived directly from XYZ’s WTCC programme give you a control range tuned for slick tyres, kerb hits and the body-control demands of a flat-floor, race-rubber set-up. On a Prelude that means the nose stays settled into trail-braked entries, the inside-rear stops skipping over compressions on circuits like Cadwell or Anglesey, and the 4WS rear (on the cars that have it) gets a stable platform to actually do its job.

You also gain real ride-height adjustability for corner-weighting, which matters enormously on this chassis – Honda’s factory geometry leaves the H22/H23 Prelude nose-heavy, and getting weight off the unloaded rear corner is the cheapest lap time on the car.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ’s circuit-focused damper, developed and validated in live race programmes including WTCC. Valving and spring choices come out of that environment rather than being scaled down from a road kit, which is why the range is positioned for track race rather than fast-road compromise. Construction is to the same monotube standard as the rest of the XYZ line, with damping force and ride height adjustable on-car.

XYZ also offer custom-made shock absorbers on this platform – if your Prelude runs significant aero, wider track, race-class spring rates or is being built to A-class or factory race-spec, the brand will spec dampers around your specific build and the circuits you actually run. Supply the build sheet and the calendar of events, and the kit can be valved for it.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude Ba8/9 Bb1/2/3/4 (1991-1996)

This kit fits the fourth-generation Prelude chassis BA8, BA9, BB1, BB2, BB3 and BB4 across the full 1991-1996 production run, covering both Si and Si VTEC variants and the 4WS cars. Chassis code is HN45 in the XYZ catalogue. Confirm your exact trim and any prior subframe or geometry modifications before ordering, since heavily modified cars are good candidates for the custom-spec route.
