XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA4/5/7 1987-1991

The third-generation Prelude was Honda’s clever-handling coupé with double-wishbones at all four corners and, on Si trim, the world’s first mechanical four-wheel steering. Thirty-five years on, the BA4/5/7 chassis still rewards a driver who can read the front end, but the original dampers were never built for the surface a UK tarmac stage throws at it. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for the Honda Prelude BA4/5/7 (1987-1991) is the suspension answer for owners running this car on sealed-stage events.

This is rally-spec damping that has to do two jobs at once: hold a low-slung 1980s coupé flat through a third-gear sweeper, then survive the mid-corner compression that ends in a yump or a patched-tarmac crest. The settings are drawn from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally programme, not adapted from a circuit kit.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1991 Honda Prelude BA4/5/7

You get a chassis that stops floating over broken tarmac and starts working with it. The Tarmac Rally damping is tuned to absorb a sharp impact – a kerb edge, a sunken drain, a compression at the exit of a junction – without spiking the spring rate into the bump-stop and unloading the inside front tyre. On the BA4/5/7 that translates directly into traction the original setup gives away every time the road surface changes.

Turn-in sharpens because the front double-wishbone geometry is finally being held in its working window instead of pitching forward on soft factory damping. The rear stays planted on throttle, which matters on a Prelude where lifting mid-corner can wash the nose wide. For Si owners running the four-wheel-steering rear rack, the coilover lets that system do its job from a stable platform rather than a wallowing one.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally damper is built to do what circuit dampers can’t: take a high-energy single hit and recover before the next corner. The construction prioritises impact absorption over outright stiffness, suppressing body movement when the car crosses a bump rather than transmitting it through to the chassis. The result is sustained tyre contact – the rally truism that traction is everything you do not give away.

Every setting on this kit comes from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac stage rally experience. That is the source of the valving, the spring choice, and the damping character. It is engineered around vehicle stability across mixed-quality surfaces, so the driver can commit to a line on a road they have only ever driven on a recce. For a BA4/5/7 – a car most owners will never see on a stage, but a handful absolutely will – it is the correct specification when sealed-stage events are the use case.
